Bernard was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Saturday, Katie Strang of ESPN reports.
The move is essentially a formality, serving to remove Bernard from the 40-man roster to clear a spot for Casey McGehee, whose contract was purchased by the Tigers on Saturday. Bernard has spent the duration of the season at Triple-A Toledo, and that's unlikely to change unless another club claims him off waivers in the next few days.
