James (hamstring) was placed on IR on Thursday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
This move cleared a roster spot for San Francisco to officially sign Mohamed Sanu in an effort to bolster the team's banged-up receiving corps. James will be eligible to return no earlier than Week 5 against the Dolphins.
