Melifonwu signed a contract with the Patriots on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Melifonwu was waived from the Raiders' IR a couple weeks ago and he'll now operate as a depth safety in New England. A 2017 second-round pick, Melifonwu could prove to be another steal for the Patriots if he can flash the talent that made him such a high selection.
Melifonwu (undisclosed) cleared waivers and reverted back to the Raiders' injured reserve on Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Melifonwu was waived by the Raiders on Wednesday with an injury designation after not having practiced since Aug. 6. He'll likely spend the entire season on injured reserve, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the safety believes he could make a return this season. If that is the case, the Raiders would have to cut him so he can sign with and play for another team.
Melifonwu (hip) worked in a walkthrough and individual drills Tuesday, Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Melifonwu spent two separate stints on injured reserve in his rookie season, totaling 11 games on the sidelines. Even once the 2017 second-round pick is fully healthy, he'll have a tough time cracking the lineup with Karl Joseph and 2017 Raiders tackle leader Reggie Nelson ahead of him in the depth chart.
Melifonwu (knee) could return from injured reserve after eight weeks, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Melifonwu was placed on injured reserve Tuesday after undergoing surgery for an undisclosed knee injury. The current expectation is that he will return when eligible, but that will ultimately be determined by whether the Raiders need to use their two alloted IR returns on other players.
Melifonwu (knee) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Melifonwu recently underwent surgery to address an undisclosed knee injury, which may have linked to the ankle issue that forced him to miss time in August. The earliest he could be activated from IR is before Week 9, prior to the Raiders' Nov. 5 matchup with the Dolphins.
