2024 NBA trade deadline winners and losers: Knicks make another savvy move, Lakers quiet as big names stay put

Thursday's NBA trade deadline was one of the last chances for teams to make significant changes to their rosters this season. This year's deadline lacked the star power of recent seasons, but some contenders did not hesitate to make moves. The New York Knicks were extremely active, adding two more solid role players to what has become one of the best teams in the NBA. By contrast, the Los Angeles Lakers elected to stand pat, hoping continuity will help them regain the magic that led them to the Western Conference Finals last year.

None of the big names that we expected to see on the move -- Dejounte MurrayKyle KuzmaAndrew Wiggins -- ended up changing teams, but that doesn't mean that Thursday's trades won't have an impact on the rest of the season and into the playoffs. Here's a look at every deal that was made this week.

Let's take a look at some winners and losers from the 2024 NBA trade deadline.

Winner: New York Knicks

In a matter of a couple months, the Knicks added OG AnunobyBojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks to an already solid roster. The latter two might not be as splashy as Anunoby, who has displayed transformative value in New York, but both Bogdanovic and Burks are knock-down shooters who will help space the floor for Jalen Brunson and the currently injured Julius Randle. They're also both capable of creating their own offense when necessary, landing in the 80th and 70th percentile in jumpers off the dribble, respectively, per Synergy Sports. With Joel Embiid's injury and the Bucks' coaching change, the Knicks saw an opportunity to perhaps seize a top-three seed in the East and made their moves accordingly. They've also done all this without surrendering a single future first-round pick. Pretty impressive.

Loser: Los Angeles Lakers

The plan in Los Angeles is apparently to wait until the summer, when they'll have three first-round picks available to go after a superstar. That's fine, but it means that the team is content riding out this season with a roster currently fighting for a play-in spot -- one that has certainly not proven itself capable of winning a title. The Lakers (27-25, ninth place in the West) could essentially be wasting productive, healthy seasons from LeBron James and Anthony Davis for the prospect of future success. Who knows how James will perform as a 40-year-old next season, but it's certainly a risk. We will never know exactly which deals were there for the taking, but none must have moved the needle enough for Rob Pelinka and the front office to pull the trigger. We'll see how James reacts and how the team performs for the rest of the season.

Winners: Role players

It may be a star's league, but Thursday's trade deadline was all about the role players. Backup point guards, spot-up shooters, defensive specialists and locker room leaders all went flying around the NBA. Not one player we'd consider a "star" was traded. Instead it was a host of solid supporting pieces, some of which we'll be seeing deep into the playoffs.

Loser: Grant Williams

Look, it's hard to call anyone making tens of millions of dollars a year a loser, but in this context, Williams didn't exactly come out on top. He signed with Dallas with the hopes of being an integral part of a team with a puncher's chance at an NBA title. Instead, he was shipped off to Charlotte, whose soonest shot at a championship may be in the 2030s. Williams was a borderline disaster with the Mavericks, shooting just 41% from the field while averaging 8.1 points per game. He's the type of player who could be rerouted to a contender at some point, but he can't be too enthused to be joining up with the struggling Hornets, even if he is from the area.

Winner: Gordon Hayward

For the same reasons Williams might be perturbed by heading to a losing team, Hayward -- heading to the Thunder -- has to be ecstatic to have a chance to contribute to a title contender once again after three-and-a-half seasons of floundering in Charlotte. When healthy, Hayward was turning in a solid season, averaging 14.5 points and 4.6 assists on 36% 3-point shooting. He'll likely get a shot to compete for bench minutes with OKC while bringing some much-needed leadership and playoff experience to one of the youngest teams in the NBA.

Loser: Washington Wizards

The Wizards had several players who were reportedly receiving interest on the open market, but the only deal they were able to make was to send Daniel Gafford to the Dallas Mavericks for a late first-round pick in the 2024 draft. Kyle Kuzma, Tyus Jones and Corey Kispert all remain on the Wizards, and all of whom could have been useful on other teams and could potentially serve to negatively affect Washington's number of ping pong balls come lottery time. It's hard to imagine they couldn't have flipped one or more of those players into future assets.

Winner: The Pat Bev Pod

Social media newsbreakers rule the NBA trade deadline, but Patrick Beverley decided to take things into his own hands on Thursday. The 12-year NBA vet slyly announced that he would be heading to the Milwaukee Bucks via his podcast's social media account.

Talk about controlling the narrative.

Loser: Killian Hayes

We wish Hayes all the best in his future endeavors, but going from the No. 7 overall pick to being released by the worst team in the NBA in a span of four years is rough. Hayes reportedly wanted to be traded, and apparently nothing materialized that the Pistons front office felt was worthwhile. After being released, Hayes will likely catch on somewhere. At just 22 years old, he's shown flashes of scoring and playmaking ability, averaging 10.3 points and 7.3 assists per 36 minutes this season.

Winner: Xavier Tillman

Not exactly the most impactful deal that went down, but for Tillman to go from one of the worst teams in in the league in the Grizzlies to the Boston Celtics, the favorites to take home the NBA championship, is a huge win. Here's more on how the backup big man can help the Celtics.

Loser: Spencer Dinwiddie

Dinwiddie will likely get to pick his next destination on the buyout market after being traded to and waived by the Toronto Raptors, but he'll also reportedly miss out on a significant chunk of change. The 30-year-old veteran point guard won't receive his $1.5 million games played bonus after the Raptors part ways with him, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. Seems unfair for a player who almost certainly would have hit the mark were it not for Toronto wanting to save some money.

Dinwiddie drawing strong interest from playoff contenders

Spencer Dinwiddie was traded from the Nets to the Raptors before the deadline, and was quickly waived by the team. He's now expected to command major interest as a free agent, with the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Pelicans and Philadelphia 76ers as potential suitors, per Shams Charania. Dinwiddie previously had a successful stint with the Mavericks before being traded at last season's deadline to Brooklyn, so perhaps a reunion could be in the works. But if he doesn't land with the Mavs, he'll undoubtedly land on a contending team looking for him to play backup point guard minutes.

Mavericks trade details with Wizards announced

Dallas is swapping 2028 first-round picks with the Thunder in exchange for OKC's 2024 first-round pick, which it is now sending to Washington to complete the Daniel Gafford trade.

As previously stated, Gafford significantly upgrades Dallas' frontcourt, however, in terms of asset management you have to wonder where the Mavericks go from here in the offseason. They will have two first-round picks at their disposal, but it will be less competitive if they want another star against say a team like the Lakers who will have three first-round picks, or the wealth of picks the Thunder have.

Bigger names staying put

The 3 p.m. ET deadline has come and gone and Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, Raptors guard Bruce Brown and Andre Drummond, Alex Caruso and DeMar DeRozan of the Bulls all appear to be staying put with their current teams. After Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving moved around the deadline last year, it was quiet in star power this year.

Spurs trading Doug McDermott to Pacers

McDermott will reportedly be returning to the Pacers for a second stint, as San Antonio is trading the sharpshooter to Indiana for Marcus Morris and a future second-round pick. The Spurs are expected to buyout Morris of his contract, making him a free agent.

Mavericks deal for Gafford still lacking some details

Earlier in the day it was reported that the Mavericks were executing a deal that would get them Gafford for Richaun Holmes and draft compensation, but it's unclear what draft picks exactly Dallas is sending. Apparently the Thunder are helping out in this deal by giving Dallas one its lower first-round picks for the 2024 draft, but there aren't details on what Dallas is giving OKC to make this possible. We'll have to see if the details get ironed out here, because this could have huge implications if the Mavs are giving up more players in this deal.

Quiet day for the Lakers?

Seems like L.A. is not going to do much in the next 70 minutes. The Lakers have hovered around .500 all season, but it doesn't appear they'll make a big move before the trade deadline.

Sixers trading Patrick Beverley to Bucks for Cam Payne

The Bucks are getting defensive guard Patrick Beverley in exchange for Cam Payne and a 2027 second-round pick.

Milwaukee's getting a veteran guard who can help their 18th-ranked defense. Since Doc Rivers took over as head coach Milwaukee has improve just slightly on that end of the floor, and perhaps Beverley could help move that progression quicker after this trade.

Nets, Suns, Grizzlies agree on reported three-team trade

The Suns are getting Royce O'Neale in a three-team deal that also sees them getting David Roddy from the Grizzlies. In return, the Suns are sending a pick swap to the Grizzlies, and three second-round picks to the Nets.

Given the limited assets the Suns had entering the trade deadline, it's a solid move to strengthen their bench as they try to make a deep postseason run.

An important note on the P.J. Washington trade:

Something to keep in mind: the Mavericks owe their 2029 first-round pick to the Nets. Why does that matter? Because it means the top-2 protected pick Dallas is sending Charlotte in 2027 can't roll over from one year to the next. Basically, what that means is that if the Mavericks pick first or second in 2027, the Hornets don't get a first-round pick. The Lakers used a similar maneuver with the Jazz last season in the Russell Westbrook trade, only that pick was top-four protected.

Hornets trading PJ Washington to Mavericks for Grant Williams

The Mavericks already have a reported trade for Daniel Gafford, and now they have a deal in the works to land PJ Washington, who they've been long rumored to get. Dallas is sending Charlotte Grant Williams, Seth Curry and a top-two protected 2027 first-round pick.

Washington immediately upgrades Dallas' power forward position, and despite a down year in terms of 3-point shooting (32.4% from deep), he's historically been a threat from there. He's averaging 13.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists, and should also help the Mavericks defensively a bit.

Pistons waiving Joe Harris

Detroit has been busy leading up to the trade deadline, but with all the players they've been sending out and receiving there needed to be some trimming down of the roster. As a result, the team is planning on waiving Harris, per Shams Charania, who has only appeared in 16 games this season. Four seasons ago, when Harris was still with the Nets, he led the league in 3-point percentage, knocking them down at an absurd 47.5% clip on over six attempts a night. But after multiple ankle surgeries during the 2021-22 season, Harris was never quite able to return to form. He was then traded to the Pistons last summer, and never really broke into the rotation.

Nets trading Dinwiddie to Raptors for Schroder

The Raptors are not done dealing. They'll be sending Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young to the Brooklyn Nets for Spencer Dinwiddie.

The Raptors get future flexibility with this deal, as Dinwiddie is on an expiring contract, while Schroder still had another year on his deal. After finally pressing the restart button by trading Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby already, the Raptors are opening up cap space for the future.

Buddy Hield trade grades

The Sixers pulled off a savvy move by obtaining the sharpshooting Buddy Hield and opening up some roster spots without surrendering a first-round pick. They got a B+ in the trade from our Sam Quinn. The Pacers, who made a team they're chasing in the standings better, didn't fare quite as well.

So who's left on the board?

We've seen a flurry of trade activity so far today, but with 2.5 hours to go before the deadline hits, let's just take stock of some of the bigger names left on the board:

  • Dejounte Murray has been the biggest name in rumors for most of trade season, but activity on that front appears to have slowed. Things can still change, and the Lakers and Pelicans are known to be interested, but for the time being, there doesn't appear to be much traction on a deal.
  • The Raptors still have two expiring contract veterans they could flip for assets in Bruce Brown and Gary Trent Jr. Brown should net a first-round pick. Trent is more like a few second-rounders.
  • The Nets have spent weeks shopping wings Dorian Finney-Smith and Royce O'Neale around the league. It's unclear if either has received an acceptable offer yet.

The Thunder have cleared two roster spots

Oklahoma City came into Thursday with a full roster spot. The Gordon Hayward trade has taken them down to 13 players. They're now light on tradable salary, so unless they're willing to move players like Ousmane Dieng or Aleksej Pokusevski, they're probably not adding another big player through trade. They should, however, be the top destination for big men on the buyout market, especially ones that can shoot. The Thunder have been killed on the glass all year and that should be the need they look to fill with those roster spots.

Bulls still adamant on not trading Caruso

Chicago is perhaps the most confusing team at the deadline. Zach LaVine being out for the season takes him out of trade talks, but the front office has lamented on multiple occasions that it has no interest in blowing the team up and rebuilding. Sure, the Bulls are in the running for a play-in spot, but given the bleak future this team has, why wouldn't you want to stockpile assets and turn the page as quickly as possible.

Caruso is perhaps the most valuable asset the Bulls currently have, even more than LaVine, and yet Chicago is insistent on not trading him. There have been reports of the team talking to the Sixers for a possible DeMar DeRozan deal, but there hasn't been any further reporting on that. Surprisingly Andre Drummond has been the Bulls player who has drawn the most attention as a trade candidate, but even that looks unlikely. There's still time for Chicago to make a move, but it doesn't seem like they really want to.

Will Dejounte Murray be traded before the deadline?

There's about three hours until the trade deadline passes and while several teams have been active, there's been no rumblings about a possible Murray trade. The Lakers, who were previously attached to the guard, seem more content with keeping D'Angelo Russell. The Pelicans were a late entry into the Murray sweepstakes, but there hasn't been any further reporting past an initial interest. We'll have to see if the Hawks can find a deal for the guard, or if it will have to be revisited again this summer.

Knicks worried about Anunoby's health?

We all expected the Knicks to add at least one meaningful player before the deadline. On Thursday, they got two in Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic. Now, it seems that they might have needed two because one of their core players could be more injured than we previously believed. According to Ian Begley, there's concern about OG Anunoby at the moment.

The Knicks are 12-2 with Anunoby in the lineup. He's been the key to their stifling defense of late. Bogdanovic and Burks are offense-centric players. They'll help replace Immanuel Quickley, who was dealt for Anunoby, but questions about New York's defense will persist if Anunoby isn't healthy.

Mavericks working with Thunder to get Wizards draft compensation

The Mavericks have a reported trade to land Daniel Gafford, however there's a hang up with the draft compensation being sent to the Wizards. Marc Stein reports that Dallas is working with OKC to get the draft picks to complete the deal with Washington. The only question is what could the Thunder be getting either from Dallas or Washington to make this into a three-team trade. Sam Presti and the Thunder have a wealth of picks, but that's a savvy front office so it's going to take something worthwhile to get them to make a deal.

Knicks land Bogdanovic, Burks from Pistons; send Grimes to Detroit

The Knicks have been huge buyers at the deadline, and now acquire Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks for Quentin Grimes, Malachi Flynn, Evan Fournier, Ryan Arcidiacono and two second-round picks.

It's a huge move from the Knicks who already made a big splash by landing OG Anunoby a few weeks back. By adding the scoring of Bogdanovic and Burks, the Knicks will be even more dangerous on offense. New York ranks in the top 10 on both offense and defense, and all their moves ahead of the deadline only strengthen that.

Mavericks acquiring Gafford from Wizards

Dallas had been a rumored team to make a move at the deadline, and now they finally have. They'll be adding big man Daniel Gafford into their frontcourt rotation, and all it cost was Richaun Holmes and draft pick compensation.

Gafford should make an immediate impact for the Mavericks who sorely needed to add size and defense. Gafford addresses both of those needs as a 6'10 center who is averaging 2.2 blocks per game and shooting 69% from the field He'll pair nicely alongside rookie standout center Dereck Lively II, the question will now be if the Mavericks start them in the frontcourt together, or if Gafford will come off the bench. Neither Gafford or Lively are floor spacers, so having them both in the paint will clog things up for Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. We'll have to see how that part works out, but it's a solid, small deal for Dallas.

Buddy Hield is the quintessential Daryl Morey player

It's honestly a bit of a surprise that the 76ers hadn't traded for Buddy Hield earlier. He's Daryl Morey's dream role player. The 76ers lead the NBA in 3-point percentage, but rank 16th in volume. Morey's Rockets consistently led the NBA in volume. Well, here's a fun fact: Hield has three of the top 15 seasons in NBA history in terms of made 3-pointers. Here are the other players on that list: Stephen Curry (6x), James Harden (2x), Klay Thompson (2x), Paul George and Damian Lillard. Hield will juice Philadelphia's shooting volume and boost their offense with Joel Embiid sidelined.

Is Gordon Hayward a Josh Giddey replacement?

Something to keep in mind with this Gordon Hayward trade: despite being a starter, Josh Giddey isn't even in the top five on the Thunder in terms of clutch minutes played. Isaiah Joe has played more than he has, and Aaron Wiggins, Cason Wallace and Kenrich Williams have also gotten several shots at closing games.

In Hayward, the Thunder have landed a player who provides similar things to Giddey, but with a far more reliable jumper and quite a bit more big-game experience. Giddey will almost certainly remain the starter, but part of the logic of this trade for Oklahoma City seems to be that it provides Giddey insurance in the postseason.

Thunder closing in on deal to acquire Hayward from Hornets

OKC just added more depth to an already potent roster, as they're acquiring Hayward from the Hornets for Tre Mann and Davis Bertans to Charlotte.

Hayward's averaging 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists this season, and is having another efficient shooting year (46.8% from the field, 36.1% from deep), which will only add to an OKC offense that already ranks fifth in the league.

Jazz trading Olynyk, Agbaji to Raptors for Porter Jr., second-round pick, etc.

The Jazz are sending center Kelly Olynyk and former lottery pick Ochai Agbaji to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Otto Porter Jr., Kira Lewis and a 2024 second-round pick.

It's unclear whether the Raptors plan on hanging on to Olynyk, as he would certainly command attention from contending teams around the league, allowing the Raptors to get even more assets. Agbaji is a second-year guard, who has shown promise early in his career. In Toronto he's likely to get more opportunity to develop, and as a bigger guard he's versatile on offense, capable of knocking down 3s and scoring off the dribble. For the Jazz, they get an additional first-round pick to use this summer to continue building around their young players.

Pacers trading Buddy Hield to Sixers

The 76ers are getting one of the best 3-point shooters of the past several years, as they're acquiring Hield from the Pacers in exchange for Marcus Morris, Furkan Korkmaz and three second-round picks.

Hield's set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and would've likely signed elsewhere, so the Pacers get assets back before losing him for nothing this summer. Korkmaz has been an end-of the-bench player for the Sixers this season, and has requested a trade before from the Sixers in search of a bigger role. Perhaps now he'll get that opportunity with Indiana. Morris is currently sidelined with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, but in the 37 games he's played this season he's shooting 40% on 3s.

Suns pivoting to Royce O'Neale, Otto Porter Jr.

Phoenix had long been attached to Miles Bridges, but it was reported Thursday morning that the Hornets forward would veto any trade at the deadline as he has a no trade clause in his contract. Now the Suns must find upgrades elsewhere, and they're reportedly interested in Nets swingman Royce O'Neale as well as Raptors forward Otto Porter Jr.

The Suns have been in need of some bench upgrades, and have limited assets due to the deals that landed them both Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. But if they're able to land either Porter Jr. or O'Neale it would be a significant upgrade as they try and position themselves for a deeper playoff run.

Knicks in talks to acquire Bogdanovic, Burks from Detroit

New York already made their big move of the trade season by acquiring OG Anunoby, a move that has done wonders for the Knicks so far this season and has them at the No. 4 spot in the East. But apparently the Knicks aren't done dealing, as they're reportedly been connected to both Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks with the Pistons.

Both players would make great additions for New York's offense, and given their aggressiveness as we inch closer to the 3 p.m. ET deadline, it appears as though the Knicks are really trying to set themselves apart to try and make a run this postseason.

Potential Dejounte to Pels deal hits snag

There was one big rumor that was gaining some traction this morning: The New Orleans Pelicans were interested in Hawks guard Dejounte Murray. However, it appears that buzz will be short-lived. Chris Haynes reports that the deal has "halted with no progress in sight."

Murray, an All-Star who was traded to Atlanta ahead of last season, has been the biggest name on the trade block ahead of the deadline. The Pelicans emerged recently as a potential suitor, but it was unclear what kind of return New Orleans was willing to offer Atlanta.

The Pels are in the thick of the Western Conference playoff hunt (currently sixth place at 30-21) and Murray could've given them another piece around Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson.

Five hours remain until the deadline, so there is still a chance these talks pick up again, but it now seems unlikely that Murray is heading to the Crescent City.

Miles Bridges staying put

Hornets forward Miles Bridges appears to be staying put in Charlotte through the deadline, per Brian Windhorst. Bridges is heading for free agency this summer and had the interest of a handful of teams, including the Phoenix Suns.

Bridges received a suspension from the NBA last April after he was arrested on domestic violence charges. He did not play in the 2022-23 season and was suspended for the first 10 games of this season. In 39 games in 2023-24, he's averaged 21.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
