Kelly allowed two hits and a run in two-thirds of an inning in a 5-4 win over the Cubs on Friday.
Kelly's seventh-inning wild pitch allowed an inherited runner to score and put one of his runners in scoring position to be plated on a Ben Zobrist single. He had gone four straight appearances and 6.2 innings without allowing a run before Friday, which turned out to be his first hold of the season. He's flirted with danger this season, walking six in 12.2 innings with a 3.83 FIP, suggesting his 2.13 ERA won't hold up. The lack of consistent control, which has reared itself time and again throughout his career, is the main reason why manager John Farrell can't fully trust Kelly in an eighth-inning role.
