Kessler completed 11 of 19 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown during Thursday's preseason finale against the Bears.

With the Browns choosing to rest No. 1 quarterback DeShone Kizer along with Brock Osweiler, Kessler drew the start and put up an impressive line, albeit against a defense that was deploying mostly reserve players. Kessler hit Rannell Hall for a 27-yard score in the second quarter before ultimately ceding the snaps behind center to Kevin Hogan. Kessler began training camp as the Browns' top option on the depth chart, but poor play in his prior preseason outings resulted in him falling behind Kizer and Osweiler in the pecking order.
