The Titans backfield is muddled, to put it kindly. There's no real telling who, if anyone, will emerge as the feature back from the group.

And the picture became simultaneously more and less clear over the weekend, with the team making a series of moves.

For starters, rookie David Cobb is not going to be an impact runner for Tennessee out of the gates. In fact, he won't make an impact for the first half of the season after the Titans put him on short-term IR.

That means Cobb will miss the first eight weeks of the season, at least.

It probably explains why the Titans were willing to acquire Terrance West from the Browns, a move they completed on Sunday afternoon, giving up a conditional pick in exchange that completed a deal which didn't surprise people in Cleveland.

West is an interesting back, having run for 673 yards as a rookie with Cleveland putting him in a time share. He doesn't feel like a feature back for Ken Whisenhunt's offense, but who does?

Bishop Sankey is probably the best bet, mainly because of the competition around him. But Sankey often looked looked out of place as a rookie. It's possible he breaks out in his second season and certainly the Titans are rooting for that.

Sankey looked bad in his preseason debut but showed some serious pop in the second week, rushing for 45 yards on just six carries. He only totaled 34 yards on 12 carries in his final two appearances, though, giving plenty of pause for concern.

There's also Dexter McCluster and Antonio Andrews sitting on the depth chart as well.

Bottom line is this: Sankey is the guy with the best chance to put up big numbers behind a decent line with a running quarterback in Marcus Mariota. He's the guy you're drafting today if you have your draft on Labor Day. He's the guy who will get most of the carries, despite Ken Whisenhunt's insistence on them handing out carries depending on the game plan.

There's no way to be entirely confident in anyone involved, but for now Sankey is the guy.

Sankey has a ton of opportunity in Tennessee now. (USATSI)
