  • Falcons' Marcus Mariota: Rushes for score

Mariota completed both of his passing attempts for 36 yards and rushed three times for 23 yards and a touchdown in Friday's 27-23 preseason win over the Lions.

Mariota only played Atlanta's opening series but made his presence felt. The signal-caller connected with first-round pick Drake London on a 24-yard gain prior to capping the series with a six-yard scramble for a score. Although London was banged up following his reception, he was reportedly walking around on the sideline afterward, which could offer a relief to Mariota as he prepares for the upcoming campaign. Behind Mariota, rookie Desmond Ridder completed 10 of 22 throws for 103 yards and two touchdowns, including a 21-yard, go-ahead score with a minute-and-a-half remaining. Ridder also rushed six times for 59 yards, helping his case to push Mariota for reps early on.

  • Falcons' Marcus Mariota: Should play some Friday

Mariota is expected to play about a quarter in Friday's preseason matchup with Detroit, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said he and Falcons coach Arthur Smith agreed to play starters for about a quarter. Mariota thus gets his first chance to throw passes to Drake London and Kyle Pitts in a game setting, assuming both guys also suit up. Reports out of camp suggest Mariota has been consistently better than rookie QB Desmond Ridder, a four-year college starter and third-round pick.

  • Falcons' Marcus Mariota: On track for Week 1 start

Mariota continues to dominate first-team snaps in practice and has looked "crisper" and "more accurate" than rookie Desmond Ridder,'s Michael Rothstein reports.

Mariota looks like one of the lesser Week 1 starters around the league, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be rapidly unseated by a rookie third-round pick. Then again, Mariota struggled to stay healthy when he was the starter in Tennessee, and that was behind much better O-lines than what the Falcons have fielded in recent years. While an injury or benching is certainly possible, it doesn't look like Ridder has much chance to earn the Week 1 starting job. Still, he'll be one of the players to watch closely this preseason, with his development potentially impacting Atlanta's plans for not only this season but also next year's draft. Mariota, meanwhile, arguably offers more upside for fantasy than real life, as he had at least 252 rushing yards and multiple TDs in each of his first NFL seasons, despite playing in offenses that didn't give him many designed runs. Those designed QB runs haven't been a huge part of Falcons coach Arthur Smith's offenses in the past, but he may reconsider that approach now that he's working with Mariota and Ridder instead of Ryan Tannehill or Matt Ryan.

  • Falcons' Marcus Mariota: Starting QB in training camp

Mariota has worked exclusively with the starters in training camp, Steve Wyche of NFL Network reports.

It's possible rookie third-round pick Desmond Ridder will get a chance to play at some point in 2022 if Mariota struggles or gets hurt, but the latter is the team's clear-cut starter heading into the season. Mariota has logged 61 career NFL starts since being selected second overall in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Titans, and Atlanta appears content to lean on his experience early on rather than rush Ridder's development.
