When the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins square off with each other in their first-ever outdoor clash Saturday, Feb. 25, they’ll be playing in the NHL’s one and only Stadium Series showdown of the season.

With both the Winter Classic and Toronto’s Centennial Classic complete, the latest edition of the Pens-Flyers rivalry will serve as the league’s final outdoor event of 2017, set right on the stage of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field.

The eighth Stadium Series to be held since the game’s 2014 inception, when seven different teams faced off in four match-ups across three different venues, Saturday’s bout figures to arrive with high stakes, especially for one side.

Whereas the Pens will be looking to gain on the red-hot Washington Capitals near the top of the Eastern Conference, the Flyers could be scrapping for their postseason lives thanks to a roller coaster of a year in the Metropolitan Division. Having lost four of its last five to Pittsburgh, Philly could -- and should -- be itching to play spoiler, if nothing else.

With preparations underway to remake Heinz Field for the outdoor rink and the Pens and Flyers set to uphold a fight for state pride that’s been waged since the 1960s, here’s a look at the history of the Stadium Series and how to watch this week’s edition of the outdoor classic:
