Thanks to a doubleheader on Chicago's south side, Saturday brings us a 16-game slate of MLB action. Here is our daily recap of everything you need to know from the world of baseball.

Saturday's scores

Chase Anderson takes no-no into eighth vs. former team

Brewers right-hander Chase Anderson had quite a day on Saturday against his former team ...

Anderson as you can see allowed only one hit, and that hit didn't come until the eighth inning, when Nick Ahmed broke up the no-no bid with a single to center. Those 11 strikeouts are a career high for Anderson against an offense that came in ranking third in the NL in runs scored and second in OPS.

Speaking of the D-Backs, Anderson was one of their players prior to the January 2016 trade that sent him to Milwaukee as part of the Jean Segura deal. Anderson came into Saturday's start with a 4.25 ERA and 2.16 K/BB ratio on the season.

We still haven't had a no-hitter in the bigs since Jake Arrieta's on April 21 of last year. No Brewer has spun a no-no since Juan Nieves way back yonder in 1987.

More to the point, Anderson pitched the Brewers to a much-needed win after they'd dropped five in a row. Incoming ...

Trout's 16th homer was a bomb

Angels superduperstar Mike Trout on Saturday against the Marlins blasted his majors-leading 16th homer, As you're about to see, it was an absolute shot ...

Woof. Marlins Park-goers aren't accustomed to seeing that manner of clout from anyone not named Giancarlo. Now for some relevant digits on what you just witnessed ...

Trout went 2 for 4 with a walk in the win over Miami, and he's now batting .342/.463/.752 for the season. In other words, he's still the best player in all of baseball.

Have a day, Mr. Strasburg

No, the Padres aren't exactly elite competition, but Stephen Strasburg's day was impressive in any context ...

Those 15 strikeouts are a career high. Let's enjoy a sampling, shall we?

Also recall that this comes one day after Max Scherzer struck out 13 Padres. As for Strasburg, after 10 starts in 2017, he now boasts a 2.94 ERA with no unearned runs allowed and 74 strikeouts against 17 unintentional walks.

Strasburg's throwing exclusively from the stretch this season, and he's even gained a bit of velocity. The simplified delivery has likely helped with his consistency, and it may even help him stay healthy. He's always had a lights-out, four-pitch repertoire, and in 2017 he may be on his way to his best season in the majors. That's a good thing for the Nats, who have designs on winning the World Series this year. Strasburg's made only one career postseason start, but he's on his way to adding to that total in a few months.

Hapless in Seattle

The Mariners fell to the Red Sox on Saturday (box score) and have now lost seven of their last eight. They've also dropped to a season-worst eight games below .500.

On that point, the current AL West standings:

Team W L Pct. GB RS RA Diff
Houston 33 16 .673 - 239 180 59
L.A. Angels 26 26 .500 8½ 211 220 -9
Texas 24 26 .480 9½ 234 226 8
Oakland 22 26 .458 10½ 195 235 -40
Seattle 21 29 .420 12½ 212 252 -40

The Astros obviously get a major assist here, but it's something of a feat to be 12 1/2 games out before June. So good work, M's.

As for Saturday's defeat, check out what the Boston starter perpetrated upon the Seattleites ...

Yes, that's 26-year-old lefty Brian Johnson. Coming into Saturday's game, he had two big-league starts and an ERA of 7.71. In fact, he'd notched only one prior shutout in 92 minor-league starts.

Here's more on the Mariners' recent struggles

Sabathia makes milestone start with Yankees

Believe it or not, CC Sabathia has now pitched more games with the Yankees than he did with the Indians. In seven and a half seasons with the Indians, Sabathia started 237 games. On Saturday, Sabathia started his 238th game in eight seasons and two months with the Yankees. (He missed most of the 2014 season with a knee injury.)

According to the YES Network broadcast, Sabathia is one of only four pitchers in baseball history to start 200-plus games with two different teams. The list:

  • CC Sabathia (Indians and Yankees)
  • Mike Mussina (Orioles and Yankees)
  • Greg Maddux (Cubs and Braves)
  • Nolan Ryan (Astros and Angels)

Sabathia celebrated his milestone start with the Yankees by throwing 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball against the A's. He allowed six hits and three walks, and struck out nine.

He had some help from his defense as well. Starlin Castro and Aaron Judge teamed up for this fun catch on a pop-up:

Sabathia has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his 10 starts so far this season, though the bullpen almost let his win get away Saturday afternoon. Tyler Clippard put the tying run on third base and the go-ahead run at second base with one out in the eighth inning before Dellin Betances bailed him out with a five-out save. New York's bullpen has struggled a bit of late. They're missing the injured Aroldis Chapman.

Simmons robs Stanton with incredible jump throw

There are so many good shortstops in baseball right now that it's easy to forget about Andrelton Simmons, who remains the gold standard at the position defensively. He's still out there doing amazing things day after day, such as robbing Giancarlo Stanton of a base hit with this insane jump throw Saturday:

Good gravy. Stanton recently said he is frustrated with his team's poor play. I can't imagine losing a hit on a play like that makes him feel any better. Simmons is a magician in the field.

Hall of Famer Jim Bunning passes away

Hall of Famer and former U.S. Senator Jim Bunning passed away Saturday, his family confirmed. He was 85. Bunning played 17 years in MLB from 1955-71 and was voted into the Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee in 1996. On Father's Day in 1964, as a member of the Phillies, Bunning threw the seventh perfect game in MLB history.

Following his playing career Bunning got into politics and served in both the U.S. House Representatives and U.S. Senate.

Homer Simpson 'inducted' into Hall of Fame

The National Baseball Hall of Fame honored "The Simpsons" on Saturday for the 25th anniversary of the episode "Homer at the Bat." As part of the ceremony, Homer Simpson was "inducted" into Cooperstown and given a Hall of Fame plaque. Check it out:

As someone who has watched an embarrassing amount of baseball and "The Simpsons" in my lifetime, I am very happy to see Homer in Cooperstown. Pretty neat.

Quick hits

  • The Tigers placed 2B Ian Kinsler on the 10-day DL with a left hamstring strain. He missed five games with the same issue earlier this most, so it appears he reaggravated the old injury rather than suffered a new injury.
  • Rangers RHP A.J. Griffin has been placed on the 10-day DL with a left intercostal muscle strain, the team announced. Veteran RHP Dillon Gee was called up to fill the vacated roster spot.
  • The Padres placed OF Manuel Margot on the 10-day DL with a calf strain, the team announced. The DL move is retroactive to Thursday. The Padres have Margot wearing a walking boot as a precaution.
  • The Rangers claimed 1B Peter O'Brien off waivers from the Reds, the club announced. O'Brien has bounced from the D-Backs to the Royals to the Reds to the Rangers since January, all without playing an MLB game.
  • Mets OF Yoenis Cespedes, who's on minor-league rehab assignment, has tweaked his quad and won't play again until Tuesday.
  • Check out Carlos Correa's work on this pop-up
