This is the final update of the season of the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings. (Thank God.) The first thing you might notice is that Tennessee finished fifth in the Top 25 And 1, which underlines just how badly the Vols were mis-seeded by the NCAA Tournament selection committee.
A 3 seed?
As I explained on Sunday night's episode of the Eye On College Basketball Podcast, there is no way to intelligently defend not having the Vols as a No. 2 seed. Moreover, it would've been more reasonable to make Tennessee the fourth No. 1 seed than to make Tennessee a No. 3 seed given that the Vols have 11 Quadrant 1 wins — which ties it with Kansas for most in the nation — and zero losses outside of the first quadrant. If you want to keep Auburn ahead of the Vols in the bracket because Bruce Pearl's Tigers were outright SEC champions, fine. But Tennessee's body of work is clearly better than every other No. 2 seed's body of work — namely Kentucky's, Villanova's and (especially) Duke's. Tennessee has five more Quadrant 1 wins than Duke, four fewer losses outside of Quadrant 1 than Duke, and better computer numbers than Duke across the board. It's not the biggest deal in the world that the selection committee screwed this up, but it is undeniable that the selection committee screwed this up.
Either way, it's all done now.
It's time to move on.
