2023 Belmont Stakes results, winner: Arcangelo sprints by National Treasure on the stretch run for the victory

A history making run, as Jena Antonucci becomes the first woman to win the Belmont Stakes as a trainer

Arcangelo (7-1) has won the 2023 Belmont Stakes, passing Preakness Stakes winner National Treasure heading into the final furlong the race and holding off a late challenge from betting favorite Forte. Jena Antonucci is now the first female trainer to win the Belmont Stakes, while jockey Javier Castellano captured two jewels of the Triple Crown this season after riding Mage to victory in the Kentucky Derby. 

After the race, Antonucci praised her horse as an "amazing gift" with a "heart of a champion." Antonucci also gave advice to those hoping to break boundaries like she did. 

"Never give up," Antonucci told Fox Sports. "And if you can't find a seat at the table, make your own table. And build your team and never give up. You are seen, people see you, just keep working your butt off." 

Arcangelo won the race in 2:29.23, finishing 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Forte with Tapit Trice behind in third. The Belmont Stakes is the longest Triple Crown race at 1 1/2 miles, but if it were any longer the result could've been different as Forte really found his stride down the stretch. 

Belmont Park is now home to three huge milestones for women in horse racing. Julie Krone became the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race by riding Colonial Affair to a Belmont Stakes victory in 1993, and 20 years prior owner Penny Chenery captured the Triple Crown with Secretariat. 

It's the first Belmont victory in 15 tries for Castellano, but the Hall of Fame trainer avoided any and all self-promotion after breaking the winless streak. 

"I give all the credit to the horse," Castellano told Fox Sports. "It's a wonderful horse and the way he did it today, I don't think this is the limit. Had a beautiful trip alongside the rail."

Arcangelo's win marked an end to one of the most controversial Triple Crown seasons in recent memory. At Churchill Downs, 12 horses have died since April 27 with seven of those deaths occurring during Kentucky Derby week. The resulting investigation caused the track to pause all racing activity at the facility. 

Then, at the Preakness Stakes, trainer Bob Baffert -- whose horse, Medina Spirit, died months after having his 2021 Kentucky Derby win disqualified because of a positive post-race drug test -- returned from a series of lengthy suspensions to win with National Treasure. 

The Belmont Stakes didn't go unscathed either, as unhealthy levels of smoke from Canadian wildfires led New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to implement enhanced safety measures at the track, including cancelling the Triple Crown finale if the air quality index exceeded 200.

Tapit Trice (6-1) is in strong position to leave Belmont Park with a win tonight. The Brad Cox-trained horse will start from post position No. 1, and 24 horses have won the Belmont Stakes from there -- at least nine more than any other post position. Post position No. 9 -- where Red Route One (13-1) will start -- has been the least fruitful, producing only four Belmont Stakes winners all-time.

History could very well be on Todd Pletcher's side today. The eight-time Eclipse Award winner has the betting favorite in Forte (5-2), and the favorite has won the last three Belmont Stakes: Tiz the Law (2020), Essential Quality (2021) and Mo Donegal (2022). Of the 154 runnings of the Belmont Stakes, the favorite has won 66 times (42.9%).

Saturday's Belmont Stakes card is shaping up to be a good one for trainer Todd Pletcher. Over the first six races, Pletcher nabbed two wins. In Race 1, Pletcher's Love to Shop rallied from near the back of the pack to win as the 9-5 favorite. Then, in the Poker Stakes, 6-1 longshot Emmanuel came with a powerful late rush to upset the heavily favored Chez Pierre. The results bode well for the Belmont Stakes (post time 7:02 p.m. ET), a race in which Pletcher has the top two favorites on the morning line: Forte (5-2) and Tapit Trice (3-1). Pletcher is trying to become just the fifth trainer with five Belmont Stakes victories.

While Kentucky Derby winner Mage will not race in the Belmont Stakes, Preakness winner National Treasure is set to compete. National Treasure, trained by Bob Baffert, is aiming to become the 19th horse to win the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in the same Triple Crown season. The last to do so was Afleet Alex in 2005, not counting Triple Crown winners American Pharoah (2015) and Justify (2018).

The Belmont Stakes is the final leg of the Triple Crown, but no Triple Crown winner will be crowned this year. Mage won the Kentucky Derby but wasn't able to go for two-for-two at the Preakness Stakes, as National Treasure took the victory at Pimlico Race Course. Since 1919, only 13 horses have won the Triple Crown with the last being Justify in 2018.

With less than three hours until the starting gate opens in the 155th Belmont Stakes, the final odds for the race have started to solidify, and the public seems to be cold on Blue Grass Stakes winner Tapit Trice. Originally the 3-1 second choice on the morning line, Tapit Trice has dropped to the fourth choice in the odds, at 6-1. Forte (5-2), Angel of Empire (7-2) and National Treasure (9-2) make up the top three choices. The final odds have been successful in identifying the winner of the Belmont Stakes; the favorite has won the race the last three years and four of the last five.

The 155th running of the Belmont Stakes is set for later today at Belmont Park outside New York City, and after a few days of concern over whether the air quality would be good enough to hold the event, the weather is expected to be perfect. The forecast calls for sunny skies and a high in the mid to high 70s. Most importantly, the Air Quality Index is forecasted to be in the 20s, which is categorized as Good, the safest category on the AQI. The dry conditions mean the Belmont Stakes will be run on a fast track for the 12th straight year. The most recent "off" track came in 2011 when Ruler On Ice won on a sloppy/sealed track.
