Maryland @ Rutgers
Current Records: Maryland 5-6; Rutgers 5-6
What to Know
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will be returning home after a two-game road trip. RU and the Maryland Terrapins will face off in a Big Ten battle at noon ET Saturday at SHI Stadium. Both of these teams will be looking for a pick-me-up after considerable defeats in their previous games.
The Scarlet Knights were expected to have a tough go of it last week, and, well, they did. They found themselves the reluctant recipients of an unpleasant 28 to nothing punch to the gut against the Penn State Nittany Lions. RU was down 21 to nothing at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. QB Noah Vedral had a pretty forgettable game, passing for only 91 yards on 23 attempts.
Meanwhile, there's no need to mince words: Maryland lost to the Michigan Wolverines last week, and they lost bad. The score wound up at 59-18. Maryland was in a tough position by the half, with the score already sitting at 24-3. No one had a standout game offensively for Maryland, but QB Taulia Tagovailoa led the way with two touchdowns.
This next matchup is expected to be close, with the Scarlet Knights going off at just a 1-point favorite. At 1-3 against the spread at home, they are no cash cow. That said, the Terrapins aren't so hot on the road, where they are 0-4.
The losses bumped both teams down to an identical 5-6. A couple defensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: RU is 193rd worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 19 on the season. Maryland has experienced some struggles of their own as they are stumbling into the contest with the 223rd most touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 43 on the season. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
