According to the Associated Press, the stadium is scheduled to be the site of the World Cup's opening match next summer.
Early reports out of Brazil Wednesday morning indicated that at least three workers have been killed with further casualties possible, but that was later amended to reflect that there were only two deaths. The collapse apparently occurred when a crane malfunctioned.
"I'm deeply saddened by the tragic death of workers Corinthians arena today," FIFA President Sepp Blatter tweeted. "Our heartfealt condolences are with the families."
While the full extent of the damage is not yet known, this could jeopardize the stadium being completely assembled prior to the December deadline set forth by FIFA.
The 70,000-seat stadium was nearly finished and was slated to host the opening game of the tournament featuring Brazil June 12.
