The way the 2020 Masters is organized this November is a bit different than usual. After all, we're not playing in April, and 2020 itself has been more than a bit mixed up. Due to the fact that this event is being hosted in November and daylight will be limited late in the afternoon, Augusta National had scheduled groups to go off both the No. 1 and No. 10 tees starting at 7 a.m. ET.
Thursday action was halted shortly after it began due to inclement weather, and those who had not yet teed off saw their starts delayed exactly three hours. That puts the afternoon groups on the course at 2 p.m., making it unlikely that first-round action will be completed on Thursday.
In terms of the actual groupings, the Masters once again nailed its choices, spreading interest throughout the day on Thursday and Friday. Nobody creates pairings as well as Augusta National as they do a fantastic job of sprinkling stars and superstars into different (sometimes unique) groups and create a balanced viewer experience.
Early on Thursday, most of the attention will be paid to either the group of Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Louis Oosthuizen or the Tiger Woods, Shane Lowry, Andy Ogletree threesome. Woods, the reigning Masters champion, is playing with the reigning Open champion (Lowry) and last year's U.S. Amateur winner (Ogletree). So far, he has massively impressed in the opening to his round.
The afternoon is hot as well with the most prominent group being Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay. All are among the 10 biggest favorites to win this year. My favorite group, though, is probably Adam Scott, Collin Morikawa and Tyrrell Hatton. That will be an absolute ball-striking fiesta, those three will put on a show with their iron play.
Here's a look at all 31 groups that will start play on Thursday at the 84th Masters. Check out our complete Masters viewer's guide for a detailed schedule and how to watch action all day.
