Patrick Reed will try to defend his title this week at Torrey Pines, but a bevy of top PGA Tour stars also will be in the mix when the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open tees off Wednesday. Reed won by five strokes last year at Torrey Pines, and Jon Rahm won the U.S. Open on the San Diego course five months later. Six of the world's top 10 players are scheduled to compete, including world No. 1 Rahm and fourth-ranked Dustin Johnson, who has not played since October. The tournament is expected to wrap up Saturday to give the NFL center stage on Sunday, and Rahm is the 15-2 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook's latest 2022 Farmers Insurance Open golf odds. Johnson is in a group at 18-1 and Reed is a 40-1 long shot. Justin Thomas (12-1), Xander Schauffele (16-1), Hideki Matsuyama (18-1) and Bryson DeChambeau (18-1) also are among the favorites in the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open field.
Will Johnson be rusty this week, or will his overwhelming talent make up for his lack of recent competition? Will Sam Burns (25-1) pick up where he left off after his brief break and put you in prime position to win with your 2022 Farmers Insurance Open Fantasy golf picks? Before making your own Fantasy golf rankings or bets on the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open, you need to check out the Fantasy golf projections and lineup advice from SportsLine PGA expert Riley Gates.
Gates has been on a roll this season. In last week's picks for The American Express, four of Gates' top five selections finished in the top 15. At the Sony, he had seven players among his top 15 who made the top 20. That included winner Hideki Matsuyama, runner-up Russell Henley and co-third-place finishers Kevin Kisner and Seamus Power.
Gates also nailed his picks the previous week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, with four of his top seven picks posting top-five finishes. And at the Hero World Challenge, again four of his top seven finished in the top five.
Now, Gates has ranked his top 20 golfers from the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open field. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Farmers Open picks at SportsLine.
2022 Farmers Insurance Open golf expert picks
Torrey Pines has been very good to Rahm, and Gates doesn't see any reason you shouldn't back the world No. 1 He has played the Farmers five times and finished in the top seven in four of those, including a victory in 2017. The Spaniard also returns to the site of his greatest triumph, after he won his first major title on the South Course. The approach is critical at Torrey Pines, and Rahm was first in strokes gained tee-to-green, eighth in strokes gained approach and second in greens in regulation last season. He also has a runner-up finish this season.
On the other hand, DeChambeau isn't nearly as accurate (with any of his clubs), and Gates is strongly fading him this week. DeChambeau was 53rd in strokes gained approach last season and 63rd in greens in regulation, and he was 146th in strokes gained around the green. His driver is his bread-and-butter, but it doesn't help him a lot at Torrey Pines, which is why has played this event just twice. He missed the cut both times, and including last year's Open (where he was 26th), he has shot 73 or worse in five of his eight rounds in San Diego.
How to set your 2022 Farmers Insurance Open golf rankings
For this week in San Diego, the fantasy expert is backing a massive long shot who is listed at more than 50-1. This veteran has been putting up great numbers but has typically been derailed by one bad round. This player can make a lot of noise if he has a consistent week, and Gates sees him as a must-play for your Farmers Insurance Open Fantasy golf picks.
