  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Winless streak continues

Lyles (0-9) took the loss Friday as the Royals were toppled 12-10 by the Nationals, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks over five-plus innings. He struck out two. The veteran right-hander was nursing a 2-1 lead through five innings, but both offenses erupted in the second half of the game, with Lyles getting chased by the three-run shot off the bat of Corey Dickerson. Lyles has served up multiple homers in seven of his 11 starts this season, getting tagged for 16 long balls over 61.2 innings in total to fuel his ghastly 7.30 ERA. He'll try to stop the bleeding in his next outing, likely to come next week at home against the Rockies.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Serves up five runs in loss

Lyles (0-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks over five innings during a 5-1 loss to the White Sox. He struck out five. Lyles has allowed four or more earned runs in eight of his last nine starts and holds a 7.15 ERA across his first 56.2 innings with the Royals. The veteran's 1.34 WHIP is consistent with previous years and suggests he could turn a corner soon, but he's never been considered an ace. Despite the struggles, Lyles is locked into Kansas City's rotation for the foreseeable future after signing a two-year, $17 million deal this offseason.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Hit hard for seven runs

Lyles (0-7) took another loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on four hits and three walks over 2.1 innings against the White Sox. He struck out two. Sunday was easily Lyles' worst outing of the season. He let up one run through the first two frames on a Christian Yelich homer and then completely fell apart in the third. He faced seven batters in the inning, allowing three walks, two singles and a double, which amounted to another four runs for the Brewers before he was pulled. Two additional runs were charged to him after Jose Cuas allowed both inherited runners to score off a three-run blast by Brice Turang. Lyles' velocity noticeably dropped down to 88.8 MPH after he had been averaging 90.7 with his fastball for the year. He has allowed at least one homer in seven of his nine starts this year and now owns a 7.14 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 38:17 K:BB over 51.2 innings. He's lined up for a tentative start against the White Sox next weekend.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Takes loss in complete game

Lyles (0-6) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on six hits over nine innings in a 4-2 loss against the White Sox. He struck out six. Lyles needed 112 pitches to go the distance Tuesday. He had six clean innings, but the White Sox cashed in with a couple of homers and two-hit innings to put up four runs. The 32-year-old has a 6.20 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 49.1 innings on the season.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Has another rough outing

Lyles gave up eight runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters over five innings against Baltimore on Thursday. He did not factor in the decision. About the only thing that went right for Lyles on Thursday was that opposing starter Grayson Rodriguez struggled just as badly, allowing Lyles to escape a loss. The veteran right-hander gave up all eight of his runs over the first three innings, with half of the tallies coming on a pair of two-run homers. Lyles has surrendered 13 earned runs across nine innings over his past two starts, pushing his season ERA to 6.69.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Remains winless

Lyles (0-5) allowed seven runs on seven hits and four walks over four innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against Minnesota. Things got off to a poor start when Max Kepler took Lyles deep in the first inning. Most of the damage came in the fourth inning however, headlined by Jorge Polanco's three-run shot. Lyles has allowed at least four runs in four of his six starts this year and is now sporting an ugly 6.11 ERA through 35.1 frames. He's expected to face the Orioles at home next week.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Handed fourth loss

Lyles (0-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk over six innings against the Angels. He struck out five. Lyles has gotten off to a rough start to the 2023 season, having allowed three or more runs in four of his five starts while allowing seven home runs. Three of those long balls came in the sixth inning of Sunday's game, when Taylor Ward, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani hit consecutive solo homers to give the Angles a 4-2 lead. However, Lyles had found a rhythm prior to the nightmare sixth inning, having retired 14 of his previous 15 batters before getting shelled. Lyles is slated for another start Friday against Minnesota, a team he held to two runs in 5.1 innings in his first start of the campaign.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Eight solid innings in loss

Lyles (0-3) took the loss Monday, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks over eight innings during a 4-0 loss to the Rangers. He struck out three. Lyles served up a one-out, three-run homer to Josh Jung in the first, but all three runs were unearned due to back-to-back errors to start the game. The lone earned run on Lyles' ledger came in the third via a solo shot from Marcus Semien. Despite the rocky start, Lyles was able to settle down and got through a season-high eight frames against a good Rangers offense. Through four outings (25.1 innings), Lyles sports a 4.26 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP with a 18:7 K:BB.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Allows four runs in no-decision

Lyles did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out four. The veteran right-hander appeared headed for his third straight loss to open the campaign as Kansas City trailed 4-2 after seven innings, but the offense rallied over the final frames to force a 10th inning. Lyles has a 5.19 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB across 17.1 innings through his first three starts of the season.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Allows one earned run in loss

Lyles (0-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings, taking the loss versus Twins on Saturday. It was far from a dominant effort for the Lyles, but he was able to get out of the jams he created and pitched well enough to win if he would have received some run support. The Royals provided none. The right-hander is expected to be back on the mound next week for a tough home matchup against the Blue Jays.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Settling in with new team

Lyles allowed two hits and struck out two over three innings in Friday's Cactus League game versus the Padres. Lyles has struck out six over eight innings this spring while allowing two earned runs, six hits and a walk. The right-hander was an effective innings-eater with the Orioles in 2022, posting a 4.42 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 144:52 K:BB across 179 innings. He should be a lock for the Royals' rotation after signing a two-year deal in December, though his ratios will likely continue to be just okay across the board.

  • Royals' Jordan Lyles: Signs two-year deal with Royals

Lyles signed a two-year, $17 million deal with the Royals on Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Lyles will be getting pretty good money for a 32-year-old with a 5.10 career ERA. His 4.42 ERA last season for the Orioles beat his career mark by a significant margin but still wasn't particularly strong, especially in a year in which offense dropped across the league. Lyles' 18.6 percent strikeout rate in 2022 was in line with his 17.6 percent career figure, so don't expect him to become a different pitcher any time soon. He should at least be able to eat a healthy amount of innings for the Royals, as his 62 starts over the past two seasons tie him for 13th in the league. Toss in his pitcher-friendly home park and relatively weak division and Lyles becomes a viable end-game option in deeper formats despite his rather bland numbers.

  • Jordan Lyles: Becomes free agent

The Orioles declined Lyles' $11 million team option for 2023 on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Lyles will receive a $1 million buyout as part of the Orioles' decision to decline his option, so he'll take home $7 million in total for his lone season in Baltimore. The 32-year-old right-hander wasn't a particularly enticing fantasy asset in 2022 with a 4.42 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 11.9 K-BB%, but he brought value to the Orioles as a competent innings eater, as he covered 179 innings over 32 starts. Baltimore could revisit bringing Lyles back for 2023 at a more team-friendly price, but he might be a candidate to move to the bullpen once the Orioles are ready to clear spots in the rotation for pitching prospects such as Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall.

  • Orioles' Jordan Lyles: Fans nine in win

Lyles (12-11) yielded one run on four hits and a walk over seven innings Friday, striking out nine and earning a win over the Yankees. Lyles was dominant Friday, firing 72 of 106 pitches for strikes including 16 whiffs -- tying his season best. The only damage against him came from Oswaldo Cabrera's solo shot in the fifth frame. Over his last three outings, Lyles has posted a 2.00 ERA with a 15:2 K:BB through 18 frames. He's lined up to make his final start of 2022 next week at home against Toronto.

  • Orioles' Jordan Lyles: Starting Friday on short rest

Lyles is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Yankees, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports. A rain delay limited Lyles to just two innings and 37 pitches in his last start Monday, so manager Brandon Hyde decided to give him the ball Friday on short rest. Given the short start his last time out, it's likely Lyles will not face any limitations in Friday's outing.

  • Orioles' Jordan Lyles: Limited by rain delay

Lyles did not factor in the decision against Boston on Monday, pitching two innings and allowing two runs on five hits and one walk. He did not strike out any batters. Lyles got through a scoreless first inning before surrendering two runs on four hits and a walk in the second. A rain delay that lasted nearly two hours soon followed, and Lyles was consequently pulled. It was a disappointing outcome for his fantasy managers after the right-hander recorded his first complete game in 10 years in his previous start, though the Orioles ended up with a win in the high-scoring 14-8 affair. Lyles likely has one more start remaining this season unless Baltimore can overcome a three-and-a-half game deficit and overcome Seattle for a wild-card spot over the waning days of the campaign.

  • Orioles' Jordan Lyles: Complete-game win

Lyles (11-11) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks with six strikeouts over nine innings against the Tigers. Lyles needed just 94 pitches to throw a complete game and earn his 11th win of the season, with the only damage on the night coming from a solo home run off the bat of Kerry Carpenter in the seventh inning. The complete game is Lyles' first of the season and comes as he had surrendered 21 earned runs through 30.2 innings over his previous six starts. He likely next lines up to face Boston next week in what could be a two-start period.

  • Orioles' Jordan Lyles: Handed 11th loss

Lyles (10-11) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings as the Orioles fell 6-3 to the Blue Jays. He struck out five. Two of the hits off the veteran righty left the yard, including a three-run blast by George Springer in the fifth inning that sealed Baltimore's fate. Lyles has been tagged for at least four runs in four of his last six starts, posting a 6.16 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB through 30.2 innings over that stretch, and his late-season fade could end up helping to cost the O's a playoff spot.

  • Orioles' Jordan Lyles: Gives up eight runs in rough outing

Lyles (10-10) took the loss against Boston on Saturday, allowing eight runs on seven hits while striking out one and walking one over 3.2 innings. Lyles failed to make it out of the fourth inning Saturday, giving up eight earned runs across 3.2 frames. He tossed 47 of 77 pitches for strikes in the outing, tallying just one strikeout. This poor outing comes on the heels of back-to-back quality starts for the veteran righty. Eight runs allowed marks a high for Lyles this season, with his previous high being six runs allowed (which he has done three times this season). Lyles will take a 4.62 ERA into his next appearance.

  • Orioles' Jordan Lyles: On track to pitch Saturday

Lyles (illness) is expected to start Saturday against the Red Sox, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports. The 31-year-old's return timeline was murky earlier this week, but he threw a bullpen session Thursday and now appears set to take the mound for Saturday's contest, barring a setback. Lyles was scratched from his previously scheduled start in Monday's doubleheader versus Toronto due to an illness, but it appears his absence will be limited to one turn through the rotation.
