  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Bounces back in big way

Cobb (5-2) allowed five hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over 7.2 shutout innings to earn the win in Saturday's 4-0 triumph over the Orioles. Cobb was lit up for seven runs over four innings against the Brewers his last time out, but he responded with his fourth scoreless outing of the season. He's gone at least seven innings in each of those stellar starts. This was also the first time in his last six appearances that he didn't walk a batter. Cobb is at a 2.71 ERA despite a 1.32 WHIP and 64:18 K:BB over 69.2 innings. The right-hander is set to face a tough test in his next start, which is projected to be in Colorado next week.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Allows season-high seven runs

Cobb (4-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks over four innings during a 7-5 defeat to the Brewers. He struck out five. Cobb walked multiple batters for the fourth time over his past five starts and surrendered a season-high seven runs. Coming into the contest, the right-hander had been excellent, sporting a 2.17 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB across 10 appearances (58 innings), so it's safe to chalk Sunday's outing up as an outlier. The 35-year-old's role in the Giants rotation is solidified as long as he's healthy, and his next start is tentatively scheduled during a three-game weekend set versus Baltimore.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Fires seven strong innings

Cobb (4-1) got the win over the Twins on Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven innings. Cobb surrendered a two-run homer to Byron Buxton in the first and then a solo home run to Michael Taylor in the fifth but otherwise did not allow a single hitter to reach scoring position. He generated 22 chases and tied his season high with eight strikeouts while tossing his third quality start over his last four tries. He's now completed at least seven innings five times this season after managing to do so only three times last year. He's sitting at a 2.17 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB over 58 innings and lines up for a road start against the Brewers over the weekend.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Struggles with control

Cobb allowed two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Phillies on Tuesday. In addition to his season-high five walks, he also had two wild pitches and a balk. Considering Cobb hadn't allowed a run in three of his last four outings, this was an unusually poor effort. It's also the third time in nine starts he's failed to complete four innings, though he's yet to give up more than three runs in any game. Cobb owns a 1.94 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 44:13 K:BB over 51 innings. He's tentatively projected for a road start in Minnesota early next week.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Delivers another dominant start

Cobb (3-1) earned the win Thursday, pitching 7.1 shutout innings while allowing seven hits and two walks against Arizona. He struck out three. Cobb was lifted after 104 pitches in the eighth inning after walking Josh Rojas. It was the third time in four starts that Cobb did not allow a run. His ERA is down to 1.70, well below his career 3.76 ERA. However, Cobb's WHIP sits at 1.24, nearly identical to his career 1.26 WHIP. So an ERA regression is likely coming.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Tosses seven scoreless

Cobb (2-1) earned the win Saturday, allowing five hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings against the Brewers. He struck out five. Cobb had no issues with the Brewers lineup Saturday, holding the team to just five hits over seven shutout innings without allowing a single extra-base hit. Despite the 2-1 record, Cobb has been incredible through seven starts this season, owning a 2.01 ERA and 6.33 K/BB. Though the 35-year-old isn't the best source of strikeouts (8.48 K/9), Cobb provides value by limiting damage while benefitting from making frequent starts in pitcher-friendly Oracle Park.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Strong start continues

Cobb did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings against the Padres. He struck out seven. Cobb turned in another strong outing Sunday. Each of his earned runs came in the fifth inning, when Austin Nola hit a two-run homer and a Juan Soto single drove in Fernando Tatis. Cobb is off to a roaring start to 2023, having tossed a complete-game shutout and owning a 2.43 ERA and an 8.25 K/BB through 33.1 innings. Considering Cobb's incredible play and pitcher-friendly home diamond, the 35-year-old should remain a strong fantasy option.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Tosses complete-game shutout

Cobb (1-1) earned the win Monday, allowing six hits and one walk over nine scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory over the Cardinals. He struck out four. This masterful performance marks the second shutout of Cobb's career. The right-hander currently ranks 10th in the league with a 1.91 ERA, and he has not allowed more than two runs in any of his starts this year. The 35-year-old veteran is tentatively slated to face the Padres on the road in his next appearance.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Fans eight in no-decision

Cobb didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-2 extra-innings win over the Marlins, allowing one run on seven hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out eight. The 35-year-old righty fell short of a quality start but did set a new season high for strikeouts, as Cobb generated 31 called or swinging strikes among his 92 pitches. He's had a strong beginning to the season, posting a 2.79 ERA and 22:3 K:BB through 19.1 innings, but Cobb is still looking for his first win as he heads into his next start, likely to come early next week at home against the Cardinals.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Chased in fourth inning Wednesday

Cobb pitched 3.2 innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out two batters. He didn't factor in the decision in the Giants' 10-5 loss. The Giants gave Cobb an early three-run lead, but the veteran hurler couldn't take advantage. He gave up a hit in each of his first three frames but escaped without Los Angeles scoring before being chased with two outs in the fourth. In that inning, he yielded a hit to five of the six batters he faced and gave up two runs, though the damage could have been worse -- one of his outs came on a caught-stealing and the other on a sharp liner to center field. Cobb's 3.14 ERA and 14:2 K:BB on the campaign appear fine on the surface, but he's made it out of the fourth inning just once in three starts.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Receives no run support

Cobb (0-1) allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Royals. The 35-year-old righty gave up one run through three frames before serving up a solo shot to Vinnie Pasquantino in the fourth. Cobb is sporting an impressive 12:1 K:BB with a 2.53 ERA through two starts to begin the year. He forced 13 whiffs Friday, including 10 with the splitter. Cobb is currently projected to face the Dodgers at home next week.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Early exit in no-decision

Cobb didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 7-5 win over the Yankees, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out six. The right-hander was stingy but not efficient, getting the hook after needing 76 pitches (47 strikes) to record only 11 outs, but he was always likely to get a quick hook after being bothered by knee soreness late in spring training. Cobb is coming off a 2022 campaign in which he struck out a career-high 151 batters over 149.2 innings, but that was also the first time since 2018 he's been able to make more than 18 starts. The 35-year-old is projected to take the mound at home next week against the Royals.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Starting second game for Giants

Cobb will start the second game of the season for the Giants on Saturday versus the Yankees, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Cobb has been battling some knee discomfort lately, but he threw four innings in a minor-league game Monday, clearing the way for him to take his first turn of the regular season. Given the difficult matchup and probably a relatively limited workload for Cobb, fantasy managers might want to consider benching him this weekend.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Throws four innings in Scottsdale

Cobb (knee) threw four innings in a minor-league contest in Scottsdale on Monday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Cobb told Pavlovic after the game that he felt "good" and that he'll be ready for the start of the season. While the right-hander does appear likely to be in the rotation from the start of the campaign, the Giants have not decided if Cobb will start the second game of the season or get pushed back. It's something to keep an eye on for those who roster Cobb in fantasy leagues, as he would face the Yankees if does start the second game or the White Sox if pushed down.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Minor-league game on tap

Cobb (knee) is slated to pitch in a minor-league game Monday on the back fields of Giants camp, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Cobb's bruised knee apparently responded well to his bullpen session Saturday, so he'll likely aim to get at least a few innings under his belt Monday as he aims to avoid a stint on the injured list to begin the 2023 season. If Cobb checks out fine following Monday's outing, he could be cleared to make a start in New York next weekend in the Giants' season-opening series with the Yankees.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Throwing bullpen Saturday

Cobb (knee) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Cobb was labeled "iffy" for the start of the season by manager Gabe Kapler on Thursday, but it appears he's trending in the right direction. The right-hander is still scheduled to start the second game of the season, as the Giants haven't announced an alternative plan for their rotation yet.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Might miss start of season

Cobb (knee) might not be on the active roster on Opening Day, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Cobb took a comebacker off his knee March 11, though he didn't seem to be hindered by the injury after he threw five frames five days later. However, the issue has kept him off the mound since and manager Gabe Kapler remarked that Cobb's status for the start of the regular season is "iffy." Injuries have played a major role in Cobb's career, though he did manage to record 149.2 frames in 2022 while maintaining a 3.73 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with the Giants.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: To start second game of season

Giants manager Gabe Kapler announced Tuesday that Cobb (knee) will start the second game of the regular season, Evan Webeck of the San Jose Mercury News reports. Clearly that knee contusion that Cobb suffered Saturday in a Cactus League start against the Dodgers is not going to be a lingering issue. The veteran right-hander pitched to a 3.73 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 151:43 K:BB over 149.2 innings (28 starts) for San Francisco last season.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Bullpen session on tap

Cobb (knee) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. The side session should provide the Giants with a good gauge for how Cobb's left knee is feeling two days after it was struck by a line drive during his Cactus League start versus the Dodgers. Cobb was diagnosed with a bruise after follow-up tests ruled out any structural damage to the knee, so the right-hander looks as though he could be on track to return to the Giants' spring pitching schedule without having to miss a start. The team will offer an update on his next steps once he completes the bullpen session.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Diagnosed with knee contusion

Cobb was diagnosed with a left knee contusion after leaving Saturday's Cactus League start against the Dodgers and is hopeful to make his next scheduled start, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Cobb was hit in the knee with a line drive during the outing, and while he looked to be in significant pain, the right-hander's tests came back negative. The Giants will want to make sure the 35-year-old is healthy before he gets back on the mound, but there's a very good chance that Cobb will be ready for the beginning of the season.
