Kansas City transferred Yarbrough (head) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Yarbrough was placed on the IL on May 8 after he was diagnosed with multiple fractures upon being hit in the head by a line drive in his start against Oakland a day prior. Kansas City won't look to rush him back from the serious injury, as Yarbrough will now miss at least two months after being moved to the 60-day IL. The southpaw's removal from the 40-man roster opens up a spot for right-hander Mike Mayers, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Omaha prior to Wednesday's game against the Padres.... Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Won't need surgery
Yarbrough (head) has been discharged from the hospital and will not require surgery. Yarbrough has entered the concussion protocol and will continue with follow-ups as required for the next month at least. The left-handed hurler took a line drive off of his head in Sunday's outing against the Athletics and was placed on the 15-day injured list with the resulting fractures. There's no timetable for his return to the mound, but it's obviously a positive development that Yarbrough won't require an operation.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Lands on IL after scary injury
The Royals placed Yarbrough on the 15-day injured list Monday with head fractures. Yarbrough took a line drive off the head in Sunday's contest with the Athletics, but he was fortunately able to walk off under his own power. That being said, he sustained facial fractures and will now be on the shelf for at least 15 days. The left-hander's true timetable to return is unknown, and the Royals will have to turn to another pitcher to replace him in the rotation when his next turn comes up Friday in Milwaukee.... Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Alert, testing underway
Manager Matt Quatraro said Yarbrough is alert, responsive and undergoing testing at the hospital after being struck in the face by a line drive Sunday against the Athletics, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The left-hander was in the midst of his best start of the season when he was hit by a 106-mile-per-hour line drive during the sixth inning, though he was encouragingly able to walk off the field under his own power. Yarbrough still picked up his first win of the season and allowed just one run on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks across 5.2 frames. He appears to have avoided a worst-case scenario, but it wouldn't be surprising if he requires a trip to the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Surrenders five runs in loss
Yarbrough (0-4) was handed the loss Tuesday against the Orioles, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over 3.2 innings. Yarbrough opened up the game by impressively striking out the first five hitters he faced. The trouble for him showed up in the fourth inning. Ryan Mountcastle launched a two-run homer to kick off the scoring and Yarbrough proceeded to allow the next six batters to reach via three singles and three walks which led to another three runs for the Orioles. He couldn't finish the frame and was replaced by Jose Cuas. Yarbrough doesn't pitch deep enough into games and his numbers have not been good. He now owns a 7.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings and lines up to face the Athletics over the weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Stuck with tough loss Wednesday
Yarbrough (0-3) took the loss Wednesday as the Royals were downed 2-0 by the Diamondbacks, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out two. The southpaw wasn't fully stretched out and lasted only 77 pitches (51 strikes) in his first start of the season, but Yarbrough did a solid job even if he did get out-dueled by a red-hot Zac Gallen. Yarbrough figures to stick in the rotation at least until Daniel Lynch (shoulder) is ready to return, but his 6.35 ERA and 7:4 K:BB through 17 innings to begin the season don't hint at much fantasy upside. He'll try to last long enough to qualify for his first win of 2023 in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Orioles.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Filling traditional starting role
Yarbrough is scheduled to start Wednesday's game in Arizona, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Yarbrough entered the rotation as a replacement for the injured Kris Bubic (elbow) last weekend against the Angels, but he served as a bulk reliever behind opener Taylor Clarke in that contest. After Yarbrough covered four innings and tossed 52 pitches in relief against the Angels, the Royals are seemingly convinced that he's stretched out enough to handle a traditional starting role in his second turn through the rotation. During his time in the Rays organization, Yarbrough frequently worked as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen, so it's possible that the Royals could occasionally deploy him in that capacity if manager Matt Quatraro wants to pair the left-hander with a right-handed opener in certain matchups.... Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Suffers loss as bulk reliever
Yarbrough (0-2) took the loss Friday against the Angels. He allowed two runs on three hits over four innings, striking out one without walking a batter. Yarbrough entered the game in the third inning and hit Zach Neto with a pitch before allowing a two-run shot to Chad Wallach. He settled down and only allowed one more baserunner, but those two runs accounted for the only offense in the game. Yarbrough has struggled in his first season in Kansas City, posting a 7.62 ERA in 13 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Will fill bulk-reliever role Friday
Yarbrough will serve as a bulk reliever in Friday's series opener against the Angels in Anaheim, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Taylor Clarke is slated to open for the Royals and work an inning or two before giving way to Yarbrough, who has plenty of experience working as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen dating back to his time with the Rays. Yarbrough has been used as a traditional reliever up to this point during his first season in Kansas City, allowing nine runs with a 4:3 K:BB over nine innings. With Kris Bubic (elbow) recently landing on the injured list, Yarbrough could be in store for several appearances as a bulk reliever.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Takes loss Sunday
Yarbrough (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits and struck out one over 1.1 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Giants. Yarbrough relieved Carlos Hernandez to get the last out of the seventh inning. Yarbrough stayed in for the eighth, but it unraveled on him quickly with a Wilmer Flores RBI double and a two-run home run from Michael Conforto. Through four appearances, Yarbrough has surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts. He has a blown save and a hold. As long as the southpaw is a reliever, he won't have much fantasy appeal, especially since he lacks swing-and-miss stuff.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Works in relief Saturday
Yarbrough pitched 1.2 perfect relief innings without recording a strikeout in Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Twins. Yarbrough was slowed by a groin strain during spring training, so he hasn't had the ability to stretch out yet. He was efficient Saturday, throwing just 12 pitches (nine strikes) to get five outs. It appears Yarbrough could be headed for a multi-inning role out of the bullpen this season, which would sap most of his fairly limited fantasy value. Should Kris Bubic falter as the fifth starter, Yarbrough still has a path to the rotation if he can build up during the season.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Set for two-inning appearance
Yarbrough (groin) is scheduled to start and cover two innings in Wednesday's Cactus League game versus the White Sox, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. After a three-week layoff from Cactus League action while he managed a groin strain, Yarbrough returned to the Royals' pitching schedule Sunday, working out of the bullpen to toss a scoreless inning in a 13-2 loss to the Diamondbacks. He'll increase his workload by another inning Wednesday, but Yarbrough still doesn't look as though he'll be on pace to handle a traditional starter's workload by the time Opening Day arrives. If his appearance Wednesday goes well, Yarbrough would likely then be cleared for one final 3-to-4-inning outing this spring, which should be enough for him to be a piggyback option or primary pitcher out of the bullpen when his first turn through the regular-season rotation comes up.... Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Slated for Cactus League action
Yarbrough (groin) made it through a one-inning minor-league appearance without issue Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. He's set up for a two-inning Cactus League appearance next in what will be his first official spring outing since late February. Yarbrough has been battling a groin strain but doesn't appear to be in any danger of missing Opening Day.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Throwing in minor-league game
Yarbrough (groin) will pitch in a minor-league game Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. He had been slated to pitch in a game on the back fields Wednesday before that was washed out by rain. Yarbrough hasn't appeared in a Cactus League game since late February because of a groin injury, but the Royals don't anticipate it affecting his readiness for Opening Day.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Pitching in minor-league game
Yarbrough (groin) is scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Though Yarbrough hasn't appeared in a Cactus League game since Feb. 27 while managing what the team has labeled as a minor groin strain, he'll be able to build up his pitch count Wednesday on the back fields at Royals camp. Assuming his groin checks out fine Wednesday, Yarbrough should have one or two more chances to pitch this spring as he looks to stake his claim to a spot in the Royals' Opening Day rotation. It's unclear if Kansas City has plans to deploy Yarbrough as as a traditional starter or as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen, with the latter role being one he became accustomed to over his past five seasons with Tampa Bay.... Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Dealing with groin strain
Yarbrough is nursing a "slight" groin strain, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The left-hander will throw a bullpen Sunday and, if it goes well, he should be back in action shortly. Yarbrough is looking to begin his Royals tenure on a good note after posting a pedestrian 4.50 ERA in 80 innings for the Rays last season.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Ryan Yarbrough: Heading to Kansas City
Yarbrough (oblique) agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the Royals on Tuesday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. The veteran left-hander was non-tendered by the Rays in November and will now continue his career with the Royals. Yarbrough often followed an opener for Tampa Bay and had a 4.02 ERA across his first three MLB campaigns, but the team opted to cut him loose after he struggled the past two seasons. He had a 4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 61:22 K:BB across 80 innings during 2022 and should slot into the back end of Kansas City's rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Ryan Yarbrough: DFA'd by Tampa Bay
Yarbrough (oblique) was designated for assignment Tuesday by the Rays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The left-hander finished the season on the injured list with an oblique strain, and it appears the Rays won't be tendering him a contract for 2023. Yarbrough was an effective rotation piece across his first three big-league seasons, but he struggled over the past two years and had a 4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 61:22 K:BB in 80 frames during 2022.... Rays' Ryan Yarbrough: Placed on IL
Yarbrough (oblique) was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. As expected, Yarbrough was placed on the IL after he suffered a right oblique strain in Thursday's win over the Blue Jays. The left-hander will now miss the remainder of the regular season but will have a shot at returning early in the playoffs. Calvin Faucher was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Friday to replace Yarbrough on the active roster.... See More ... See Less -
Rays' Ryan Yarbrough: Likely heading to IL
Manager Kevin Cash said after Thursday's win over the Blue Jays that Yarbrough may have suffered a strained right oblique, and it's "highly likely" the left-hander will be placed on the 15-day injured list, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Yarbrough followed an opener Thursday and allowed two runs in one inning before he exited with the injury, though he still ended up picking up his third win of the year. Assuming he moves to the injured list as expected, the 30-year-old will miss the rest of the regular season and will be eligible to return early in the playoffs.... See More ... See Less

Jeffrey Flanagan@FlannyMLB27D agoYes, I’m still disgusted with MLB’s refusal to follow the NFL and level the economic playing field, and yes, the Royals are the only small-revenue team to win it all in over 3 decades, but as Ryan pointed out, giving up 17 free bases today is unreal — that is coaching, discipline
