Steen was dropped down to AHL Providence on Thursday.
Even with open spots in the lineup due to the absences of Brad Marchand (suspension) and Patrice Bergeron (upper body), Steen was unable to secure his place ahead of Thursday's matchup with Carolina. Instead, the 23-year-old center will head down to the minors while jack Studenic and Tyler Lewington earn promotions.
