The Marlins optioned Castano to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Castano struggled in his only appearance for the Marlins on Friday, allowing three runs on two homers. He goes to Triple-A to make room for Devin Smeltzer after Smeltzer had his contract purchased Sunday.... See More ... See Less

Marlins' Daniel Castano: Contract selected
The Marlins selected Castano's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday. Castano will jump in the Miami bullpen beginning with Tuesday's game against the Twins. He posted a 4.04 ERA and 20:9 K:BB over 35.2 major-league innings in 2022.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Good start to spring training
Castano (shoulder) has made two Grapefruit League appearances to date, covering four innings while striking out three and allowing one earned run on four hits and no walks. Castano didn't make any appearances after July 28 of last season after taking a line drive off the head and suffering a concussion, but he looked on tap to rejoin the Marlins in September before he developed a left shoulder strain while ramping back up once he was cleared for the head injury. The southpaw has since moved past the shoulder issue and looks healthy for spring training, but he was pushed off the Marlins' 40-man roster in January and will face an uphill battle to win an Opening Day role with the big club.... Marlins' Daniel Castano: DFA'd by Miami
Castano (shoulder) was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Thursday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Castano appeared in 10 games (seven starts) for the Marlins in 2022 and had a 4.04 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 20:9 K:BB across 35.2 innings. He was sidelined for over a month by a concussion after being struck in the head by a comebacker last summer, and he was also diagnosed with a small labrum tear in his shoulder in September. It's unclear if the left-hander will be ready for the start of spring training in February.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Managing shoulder issue
Castano (concussion) recently underwent an MRI that revealed a small labrum tear in his shoulder, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Castano has been sidelined with a concussion for over a month, but he resumed mound work in late August. However, his recovery will be delayed due to this shoulder injury. The lefty is expected to rehab the issue rather than undergoing surgery, but it's unlikely Castano will be able to rejoin the Marlins prior to the end of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Resumes mound work
Castano (concussion) threw a 10-pitch bullpen session Aug. 22 but has yet to be cleared for running, MLB.com reports. Castano is still working his way through the concussion protocol after being drilled in the head by a line drive in a July 28 start against the Reds, and though he's progressing through baseball activities, he looks like he still needs to pass some more tests before ramping up his cardio work. Given that he's been sidelined for more than a month and hasn't yet been cleared to face hitters, Castano will likely be limited to a bullpen role if he's activated from the 7-day injured list before season's end.... Marlins' Daniel Castano: Placed on injured list
Castano was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Castano's placement on the injured list doesn't come as a significant surprise since he was diagnosed with a mild concussion and a forehead contusion when he was hit by a comebacker Thursday against the Reds. It's not yet clear whether the southpaw will need to spend more than a week on the shelf.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: CT scan normal
Castano (concussion) underwent a CT scan after Thursday's start against the Reds that came back normal, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Castano has been diagnosed with a mild concussion and a forehead contusion after being hit by a comebacker in the first inning of Thursday's matchup. It wouldn't be surprising to see him at least require a trip to the 7-day injured list, but the fact his CT scan was normal is certainly encouraging. The Marlins' rotation has been shorthanded in recent weeks, but it's possible that Jesus Luzardo (forearm) will be able to rejoin the team next week.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Sustains bruise, mild concussion
Castano was diagnosed with a mild concussion and a forehead contusion after he was removed in the first inning of his start Thursday against the Reds. He recorded two outs and was charged with one earned run on two hits. Castano exited the contest after Donovan Solano's comebacker struck the lefty pitcher in the forehead. The Marlins plan to evaluate Castano further, but the fact that he's already been diagnosed with a mild concussion suggests he'll be a candidate to go on the 7-day injured list. Miami called up Castano from Triple-A Jacksonville earlier in the day to serve as its fifth starter following Max Meyer's (elbow) recent placement on the IL, but Castano may not have been in line for another start even if he was able to escape Thursday's contest unscathed. Jesus Luzardo (forearm) completed his third rehab start Wednesday and could be ready to return from the 60-day IL when Miami requires a fifth starter next week.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Exits after being hit by comebacker
Castano was removed from Thursday's game against the Reds in the bottom of the first inning after being hit in the head by a comebacker, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Castano was called up prior to Thursday's start and allowed a run on two hits and no walks while failing to strike out a batter in two-thirds of an inning prior to his removal. The ball that ricocheted off his head was 104.3 mph off the bat, and the left-hander was thankfully able to walk off the field under his own power. While it's encouraging that Castano didn't require a cart to get off the field, the extent of his injury isn't yet clear. Even if he doesn't require an IL stint, he isn't guaranteed another turn through the rotation since Jesus Luzardo (forearm) will likely be in the mix to return next week.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Called up for spot start
The Marlins announced Castano will be called up from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Thursday's game in Cincinnati, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Castano will be entering the rotation as a replacement for Max Meyer (elbow), who was moved to the 15-day injured list over the weekend. Before he was optioned to Jacksonville on July 15, Castano made nine appearances (six starts) for Miami, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 20:9 K:BB across 35 innings. The southpaw may just be making one turn through the rotation before heading back to Triple-A, as Jesus Luzardo (forearm) could be ready to come off the 60-day IL when the Marlins next require a fifth starter Aug. 2.... Marlins' Daniel Castano: Sent down to Triple-A
Castano was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Castano will return to Jacksonville after he was called up June 15, posting a 4.35 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with 18 punchouts over 31 innings in six starts while in the majors. He'll likely remain one of the Marlins' top options for a potential call-up later this season. The move opened a roster spot for Cody Poteet (elbow), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Gets little help in loss
Castano (1-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Marlins fell 3-2 to the Pirates, giving up three runs on five hits over five innings. He struck out three without walking a batter. It wasn't a bad outing for the southpaw, but Miami's offense couldn't get much going even though Pittsburgh was stuck using a bullpen day. Castano did serve up a homer for the fifth straight start however, a stretch in which he has a 5.55 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB through 24.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Hit hard by Mets
Castano (1-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and no walks while striking out two across four innings to take the loss Thursday against the Mets. Castano got through the first two innings without incident, but he allowed two runs in the third inning and four in the fourth -- the big blow coming on a three-run homer by James McCann. Castano has had an uneven performance since joining the rotation, as he maintained a 2.86 ERA across four starts entering Thursday's game. However, in five total starts this season, Castano has just a 15:9 K:BB across 26 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Picks up first win
Castano (1-1) earned the win against the Nationals on Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three and walking two over five innings. Castano threw 51 of 82 pitches for strikes, and though he allowed three runs, only one was earned because of throwing errors in the second inning. Castano appeared in three games this season as a reliever, but he has started in his last four appearances. He will take a 2.42 ERA into his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Records quality start against Mets
Castano allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four in seven innings during Sunday's win over the Mets. He didn't factor into the decision. Castano lasted just 3.2 innings during Tuesday's start against the Rockies, but he had his longest outing of the season Sunday while posting his second quality start in his last three appearances. The southpaw hasn't struck out many batters in the majors this year but has posted a 3.18 ERA in 17 innings over three starts since rejoining the Marlins. He projects to make his next start on the road against Washington on Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Short outing in no-decision
Castano allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks across 3.1 innings during Tuesday's 9-8 win over Colorado. He had three strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. Castano threw only 44 of his 70 pitches for strikes and exited during the top of the fourth inning with the Marlins trailing 4-0, but the offense rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame to take him off the hook for the loss. The left-hander delivered 6.2 scoreless innings during his first start of the season last week, and he'll likely remain in Miami's rotation for at least another turn since Edward Cabrera (elbow) and Cody Poteet (elbow) remain on the injured list.... Marlins' Daniel Castano: Stays in rotation
Castano is listed as the Marlins' scheduled starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Rockies in Miami. With Jesus Luzardo (forearm), Cody Poteet (elbow) and Edward Cabrera (elbow) all stuck on the injured list, Castano will be awarded a second straight turn in the rotation. The 27-year-old lefty impressed last week against the Phillies in his first start of the season at the MLB level, covering 6.2 scoreless innings while scattering five hits and two walks. He'll line up for two starts this week, with his second turn set to come Sunday at home against the Mets.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Daniel Castano: Blanks Phillies in no-decision
Castano didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Phillies, allowing five hits and two walks over 6.2 scoreless innings. He struck out three. Making his first big-league start of the season and first appearance for Miami in nearly a month, the southpaw baffled the Phillies over 105 pitches (72 strikes) and was in line for the win until Tanner Scott melted down in the ninth inning. Castano almost certainly earned another turn in the rotation with this performance, but his 4.82 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 28 innings for Triple-A Jacksonville this season are warning signs his success may not last long.... Marlins' Daniel Castano: Recalled to start Wednesday
Castano was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Castano was sent to the minors in late May, and he posted a 3.71 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 17 innings over three starts in Jacksonville since his demotion. The southpaw's first three big-league appearances in 2022 came as a reliever, and he struck out two in four scoreless innings.... See More ... See Less
