AC Milan claim Serie A title in style, downing Sassuolo 3-0 to win first Scudetto in a decade
Inter Milan also won but it was not enough to catch their crosstown foes
AC Milan are the Serie A championss after an exciting race that ended with the Rossoneri winning their first Scudetto since the 2010/11 season. Stefano Pioli's side won easily against Sassuolo, finishing with a 3-0 margin, thanks to two goals scored by French striker Olivier Giroud and another from midfielder Franck Kessie. AC Milan managed to win the title after an incredible race especially, especivally over the second half of the season. Despite some injuries to key players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who missed months at a time, they were able to hold off rivals Inter Milan. Inter's final day 3-0 win against Sampdoria ended up not matteringbecause they needed AC Milan to lose against Sassuolo in order to win the title. Inzaghi's side ends the season with two titles, the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa, but without the Scudetto.
Milan fans can now celebrate their 19th Scudetto, a mark that draws them level with Inter who won their 19th title last year under coach Antonio Conte. This is also the first Scudetto won by coach Stefano Pioli who overcame the criticism levelled at him by those who thought he was not up for the job when he was appointed as AC Milan manager. The Rossoneri ended the season with 86 points, two more than Inter Milan and next year will face Simone Inzaghi's side in the Supercoppa Italiana thanks to Inter'se Coppa Italia against Juventus earlier in May. This is also the first Scudetto that the club won after former owner Silvio Berlusconi left the club in 2017 and comes amid rumors this week there might be a new owner for the Rossoneri. Right now the current frontrunner to buy the club is RedBird Capital, the American private investment firm based in New York City and founded by Gerry Cardinale.
But for now, AC Milan fans can now celebrate the Scudetto, there will be time to talk about their new potential owners once the summer starts.
GOAL - CORREA SCORES A BRACE
Two goals in three minutes goal for Joaquin Correa. In the first case the Argentinian striker was assisted really well by Hakan Calhanoglu (his 12th assist of the season) while the second one was a personal play that he turned into his second brace of the season with the Inter jersey.
GOAL - PERISIC SCORED
Another goal scored by Ivan Perisic gives the lead to Inter Milan. However, considering the result of Reggio Emilia, this doesn't change the Scudetto race as of now.
