Varlamov gave up four goals on 21 shots in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Rangers.

Varlamov dominated the Rangers last season, but the Islanders team in front of him this year looks older and slower, while the crosstown rivals have been reinvigorated by upgrading to Gerard Gallant behind the bench. Despite having a tremendous defensive coach in Barry Trotz, the Islanders are rapidly backsliding, and Varlamov hasn't helped, posting an 0-4 record and a sub-.900 save percentage in four of five appearances. Chris Kreider and Kevin Rooney both scored two goals against Varlamov in this one.
