This is one of the last times his team has seen Balmer. (US Presswire)

As Rapid Reporter John Keim pointed out Wednesday, defensive end Kentwan Balmer had an unexcused absence from Redskins training camp and coach Mike Shanahan hadn’t talked to the former first-round draft pick of the 49ers.

One day later, nobody seems to know Balmer’s location, and it appears that for the second time in three seasons, Balmer has gone AWOL from a training camp.

“Hopefully it’s nothing very serious,” Shanahan said, via the Washington Post.

This, however, isn’t the first time Balmer has left a training camp without permission. He did the same thing with San Francisco in 2010, and that action (or inaction on Balmer’s part) led to a trade away from the 49ers to Seattle.

According to CSN Washington, Redskins officials checked Balmer’s hotel room, and they found it empty, save for a team-issued sweatshirt. PFT writes that the phone number the team has for Balmer has been changed.

Balmer’s best season came in 2010 with the Seahawks when he started 11 games and recorded 43 tackles. Last year with the Redskins, he only played in three contests.

As Keim writes, Balmer has an uphill battle to win a roster spot, and surely -- and this seems rather obvious -- the unexcused absences won’t help him in that quest.
