To say there's a lot on the line in the coming rematch between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams is a bit of an understatement, when you consider what's at stake. With a chance to punch their ticket to the NFL Super Wild Card Weekend with a victory on Sunday, the 49ers are going to ask Jimmy Garoppolo to work through a torn ligament in his thumb that initially left him in grave doubt for this contest -- the veteran quarterback being the expected starter in the regular season finale, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Garoppolo was listed as questionable for the game on the team's final injury report after having been a limited participant in practice all week, but word has it he looked mostly normal whenever he threw the ball over the past several days. The confidence head coach Kyle Shanahan has in Garoppolo's ability to perform despite the injury is high, as evidenced in Shanahan's decision to not activate another quarterback to the active roster this week behind Garoppolo and rookie first-round pick Trey Lance.
Shanahan isn't operating without obvious insurance, however, with Lance having also been prepped to potentially take the field against the Rams, should things not go as planned with Garoppolo. And with the Rams having the ability to clinch the NFC West crown and a chance to dig into the No. 2 seed in the NFC should they defeat the 49ers, it would behoove San Francisco to be ready to do whatever they need to -- because Los Angeles isn't going to make things easy for Garoppolo or anyone else.
