There are a couple of intriguing situations to keep an eye on around the league this week when it comes to quarterbacks who could potentially step up as starters in Week 17. If Lamar Jackson's ankle continues to be an issue -- and based on the fact that he was limping heavily Wednesday and missed practice Thursday, it looks like it is -- Tyler Huntley will be a top-12 QB against the Rams, while Trey Lance would also be in that range if Jimmy Garoppolo's thumb injury keeps him out, as seems likely.
I wouldn't necessarily start either Huntley or Lance over any of the established studs at the position, a group that still includes Kyler Murray and Matthew Stafford, despite some disappointing showings of late. However, I would start both over the likes of Rusell Wilson, and Tua Tagovailoa this week, among others, so keep that in mind.
Here are the injuries as of Sunday morning:
- Out: Kirk Cousins (COVID), Teddy Bridgewater (concussion), Jared Goff (knee), Lamar Jackson (ankle), Justin Fields (ankle)
Sean Mannion will make his first appearance of the season Sunday when he starts in Cousins' place, which lowers the entire offense's upside against the Packers. Drew Locke and Tim Boyle do the same for the Broncos and Lions, respectively.
- Questionable: Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb)
Fields is questionable for Sunday's game, but Andy Dalton has already been named the starter for the game against the Giants. Dalton is just a low-end QB2. And, if I had to guess, Jackson and Garoppolo are probably more on the doubtful side of questionable. If they are out, Tyler Huntley and Trey Lance are both top-12 quarterbacks for me.
In: Carson Wentz (COVID),
Wentz was officially cleared Sunday morning and will start against the Raiders.
