Murray (ankle) expects to start running on a hard surface next week, Ben Goessling of ESPN.com reports.

Murray, who shed his walking boot last week, has spent much of the offseason rehabbing from March ankle surgery. He's expected to take a big step next week and run on the field after doing much of his rehab thus far either in the pool or on a weight-supporting treadmill. If he's able to return to full health prior to training camp, Murray could be the front-runner for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart at running back ahead of rookie Dalvin Cook and Jerick McKinnon.
