• Dodgers' River Ryan: Contending for Opening Day rotation

  Ryan has impressed this spring and has a chance to open the regular season in the Dodgers' rotation, Courtney Hollmon of MLB.com reports. Ryan was particularly impressive Tuesday in an outing versus Cleveland, firing two scoreless and hitless innings while issuing one walk and striking out three batters. Through two Cactus League appearances, the right-hander has tossed three scoreless frames with a 4:2 K:BB. Ryan missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he reportedly had a normal offseason and put on about 30 pounds in an effort to increase his durability. He's still more likely than not to begin the campaign in the minors, but injuries within the Dodgers' starting corps -- including to Blake Snell (shoulder) and Gavin Stone (shoulder) -- along with Roki Sasaki's struggles have at least cracked the door open a bit for Ryan to break camp with the big-league club.

Ryan has had a relatively normal offseason after missing the entire 2025 campaign following Tommy John surgery, but it's at least worth noting his presence on the mound to begin camp. The 27-year-old made his MLB debut in 2024 for the Dodgers, making four starts, and produced a 1.33 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB across 20.1 innings. Ryan packed on 30 pounds while rehabbing in an effort to increase his durability. The right-hander is expected to open the 2026 campaign in the minors.

Ryan believes his relatively slight build contributed to the Tommy John surgery that knocked him out for the entirety of the 2025 season. While rehabbing that injury, Ryan "ate a lot of calories" and "lifted like an animal," which resulted in his weight going from 195 to 225. Ryan said he's had a normal offseason, having already thrown 10 bullpen sessions and touched triple digits on the radar run. The 27-year-old is unlikely to be on the Dodgers' Opening Day roster, but he could be a key rotation depth piece. Ryan held a 1.33 ERA and 18:9 K:BB over 20.1 innings covering four starts for the Dodgers in 2024.

  Ryan allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Sunday. Ryan yielded a two-run home run to Brent Rooker in the first inning and put traffic on the bases in three of the next four frames. After loading the bases with two outs in the fifth inning, Ryan was pulled at 75 pitches (48 strikes), and Evan Phillips escaped the jam. While it was the shortest of his three starts and the first time he's given up multiple runs, this wasn't necessarily a poor showing from Ryan. He has a 1.72 ERA despite a 1.28 WHIP and 14:9 K:BB over 15.2 innings. That walk rate is what portends the most trouble for him in the majors if he can't get it under control. Walker Buehler (hip) will require at least one more rehab start, so Ryan can tentatively be penciled in for a home start versus the Pirates next weekend.

Ryan was responsible for one run after Alex Vesia allowed a two-run home run to Yainer Diaz in the sixth inning. While he again walked three batters, Ryan has acclimated well to the majors so far through two starts, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 11 innings. According to Callis, Ryan came down with shoulder fatigue during spring training and is expected to arrive in Oklahoma City in late May or early June. A divisive dynasty prospect due to wide-ranging expert opinions, Ryan turns 26 in August and has only made two career starts at Triple-A, so he is already a bit behind his peers developmentally due to starting off his pro career as an infielder. He had a 3.80 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 110 strikeouts in 104.1 innings last year, primarily with Double-A Tulsa. Those highest on Ryan see several plus pitches and a high ceiling as a starter, while others project him to end up as a high-leverage reliever.
