Rays' Joe Boyle: Set to start game No. 2
The Rays recalled Boyle from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and will have him start the second game of the season Saturday against the Cardinals, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The right-hander was competing for a roster spot before being sent to minor-league camp last week, but he'll end up being a late addition to the Opening Day rotation with Ryan Pepiot (hip) headed to the injured list Nick Martinez (knee) banged up. Boyle started in nine of his 13 appearances for Tampa Bay last season and had a 4.67 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 58:28 K:BB across 52 innings.

Rays' Joe Boyle: Sent to minor-league camp
The Rays assigned Boyle to minor-league camp Friday.
Boyle had been in contention for a spot in the big-league bullpen, but he'll fall short of those aspirations. The 26-year-old allowed seven runs (four earned) with a 16:8 K:BB across 9.2 innings during spring training. Per Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun, Boyle will be stretched out to be a starter at Triple-A Durham.

Boyle allowed two runs on two hits and four walks in three innings during Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He struck out six.
Through four Grapefruit League outings (two starts), Boyle now has a 3.72 ERA, a shaky 1.66 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB covering 9.2 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander is in contention for a bullpen spot with the Rays this spring as a long reliever, but he's not in position to begin the year in Tampa Bay's rotation after closing 2025 as a starter. Last year, Boyle recorded a 4.67 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 58:28 K:BB over 52 regular-season frames (nine starts).

Boyle (1-4) took the loss against the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five across five innings.
Boyle had given up just one earned run over his previous two starts, but he couldn't carry that momentum into Saturday's AL East clash. He generated 15 whiffs on 92 pitches but couldn't avoid the loss as the Rays were limited to just one run. Rays' Joe Boyle: Strikes out nine in no-decision
Boyle allowed one run on four hits and four walks while striking out nine over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Sunday.
Boyle pitched fairly well, but the four walks got his pitch count up early. He exited at 93 pitches (62 strikes), and the Rays' bullpen was able to keep the lead the rest of the way. Boyle has had mixed results this year, but he's now at a 4.40 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 53:25 K:BB through 47 innings over 12 appearances (eight starts). He's allowed just one run over 10.1 innings in his two outings since returning to the big-league roster after a rough August. Boyle should get one more start this season, which is expected to be on the road in Toronto.

Boyle is slated to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox in Tampa.
After officially being eliminated from playoff contention Friday, the Rays appear set to finish out the season with a six-man rotation that includes Boyle. The Rays recalled the right-hander from Triple-A Durham on Monday, and he fared well in his start against the Blue Jays later that day, taking a no-decision while striking out five over six shutout innings. For the season, Boyle owns a 4.64 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB in 42.2 innings over 11 appearances (seven starts) for Tampa Bay.

Rays' Joe Boyle: Quality start in return
Boyle took a no-decision in Monday's 2-1 extra-innings loss to Toronto, allowing three hits and no walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out five.
Boyle was recalled from Triple-A Durham for this start and posted arguably the best performance of his three-year career against the division-leading Blue Jays. The right-handed flamethrower generated a respectable 11 whiffs out of his 78 total pitches to notch his first quality start of the season. Across 42.2 total frames, Boyle now sports a 4.64 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB. If he remains in the rotation, his next start would line up to either come against Boston at home this weekend or on the road at Baltimore early next week.

Rays' Joe Boyle: Recalled to start Monday's game
The Rays recalled Boyle from Triple-A Durham, and he'll start Monday's game against the Blue Jays at Tampa Bay.
The right-hander was demoted in late August after allowing 16 runs (15 earned) over his final three starts for the Rays. Boyle collected a 2.08 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 13 innings in three starts this month with Durham, but he also issued 10 walks during that time. He's not a recommended streaming option Monday in what could just be a spot start.

Boyle had yielded 16 runs (15 earned) over his last three starts and did not last longer than four innings in any of those outings. He will look to sharpen things up back at Durham and hope to get another opportunity with the Rays later this season.

Rays' Joe Boyle: Will be optioned back to minors
Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said Friday that Boyle will be optioned to Triple-A Durham, Tom Krasniqi of 95.3 WDAE reports.
Boyle surrendered six runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks over four innings in Thursday's loss to the Cardinals and has been tagged for 16 runs (15 earned) over his last three starts. The right-hander has dominated at Durham this season (1.73 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 96:31 K:BB in 73 innings) and shown flashes at the major-league level, but Boyle is still looking for more consistency.
