  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Rocky spring continues

Cantillo allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out one over 1.1 innings in Thursday's spring start against the Mariners.

Cantillo, competing for a spot in the Guardians' rotation, had a second consecutive rough Cactus League outing. He worked his pitch count to 47 (29 strikes) but for the second straight start, the left-hander was pulled early in the first inning so that he could return for the second. Three first-inning doubles results in two runs, then a second-inning fielding error, compounded by a walk and a single, led to two unearned runs. Cantillo has allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk over 2.2 spring innings.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Hiccup in spring debut

Cantillo allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two over 1.1 innings in Saturday's spring start against the Brewers.

Cantillo started a split-squad game to begin his candidacy for one of three available spots in Cleveland's rotation. After giving up two hits and a run in the first inning, the left-hander was removed to ensure he could get a second up-and-down. Cantillo then allowed a home run to lead off the second frame but was able to build his pitch count up to 33 (22 strikes). He is competing with Logan Allen, who started the Guardians' other game Saturday, Slade Cecconi and Parker Messick for spots behind Tanner Bibee and Gavin Williams.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Competing for rotation

Cantillo will compete for a spot in the rotation this spring, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Cantillo spent the second half of the 2025 season in the Guardians' rotation but apparently will have to win a spot this spring. The left-hander had a 2.96 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 72:28 K:BB over 13 starts (67.0 innings). He and prospect Parker Messick are the frontrunners for a spot on the back end of the rotation. If Cantillo loses out, he could break camp with a bullpen role. In 21 appearances as a reliever in 2025, the 26-year-old posted a 3.81 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while limiting batters to a .229 batting average.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Entering postseason with momentum

Cantillo didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Rangers, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out eight.

With Cleveland trying to clinch a playoff berth, Cantillo fell one out short of qualifying for a quality start while coming one strikeout shy of tying his season best. The left-hander has been a solid member of the rotation while Luis L. Ortiz has been on non-disciplinary paid leave, and the former figures to play a significant role in the Guardians' postseason run after notching a shiny 1.59 ERA across his last seven starts. Cantillo wraps up the regular season with a 3.21 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 108:42 K:BB over 95.1 innings.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Fans five in no-decision

Cantillo did not factor in the decision during Sunday's loss to Minnesota. He allowed a run on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings while striking out five.

Cantillo gave up his lone run in the third inning. He loaded the bases in the fifth but was not charged with any runs after Erik Sabrowski cleaned up the mess. Cantillo has given up fewer than two runs in six consecutive outings; during that span, he's produced an impressive 1.32 ERA across 34 frames. However, he's also walked 12 batters during that time and has issued 28 free passes in his last 12 starts. Cantillo owns a 3.21 ERA with a 100:42 K:BB through 89.2 innings this season. He's expected to make his final start of the regular season next weekend at home against the Rangers.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Stingy in no-decision Tuesday

Cantillo didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-5 extra-inning win over the Tigers, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out three.

The southpaw left the mound with the Guardians clinging to a 2-1 lead, but both bullpens struggled before the game was eventually decided in the 10th. Cantillo has given up one run or fewer in five straight starts, posting a stellar 1.21 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB over his last 29.2 innings. He's scheduled to make his next start on the road this weekend in Minnesota.

  • Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Pitches into ninth inning

Cantillo (5-3) got the win over the Royals on Tuesday after tossing eight scoreless frames while allowing just four hits and no walks. He struck out five.

Cantillo was phenomenal in what was just his third start of at least six innings pitched in his young career, and the second such start in his last two outings. Cantillo came back out for the ninth but was pulled after 92 pitches following a leadoff single by Kyle Isbel. Cantillo's velocity was notably up across the board, and he didn't issue a walk for the first time in his last seven appearances. Over his last four major-league starts, Cantillo owns a 1.09 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. He lines up for a road start against the Tigers next week.
