• Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Mixed results in season debut

  Cantillo allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters over 3.2 innings in a no-decision against Seattle on Saturday. Cantillo wasn't hit all that hard, as one of the four hits against him was an infield single and the only extra-base hit he gave up was a second-inning double. However, he walked three batters and needed 91 pitches to get through just 3.2 frames. Cantillo did manage a healthy five punchouts after posting a 10.2 K/9 in each of his first two big-league seasons, so fantasy managers weren't left entirely out to dry by his short outing. The southpaw's next start is tentatively slated to take place at home against Chicago next Friday.

• Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Makes fourth spring start

  Cantillo allowed three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out six over 4.2 innings in Friday's spring start against the Angels. Cantillo had a couple of shaky stretches but overall pitched well in his fourth Cactus League start. He opened the game by issuing a walk to Zach Neto and then balked him to second before the runner eventually scored. The lefty then retired the next eight batters before allowing a two-run home run in the fourth inning, which he followed by setting down the next five batters. He left the game after throwing 74 pitches (45 strikes). Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt is still evaluating Cantillo, Logan Allen, Slade Cecconi and Parker Messick for the final three spots in the rotation.

Cantillo, competing for a spot in the Guardians' rotation, had a second consecutive rough Cactus League outing. He worked his pitch count to 47 (29 strikes) but for the second straight start, the left-hander was pulled early in the first inning so that he could return for the second. Three first-inning doubles results in two runs, then a second-inning fielding error, compounded by a walk and a single, led to two unearned runs. Cantillo has allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk over 2.2 spring innings.

• Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Hiccup in spring debut

  Cantillo allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two over 1.1 innings in Saturday's spring start against the Brewers. Cantillo started a split-squad game to begin his candidacy for one of three available spots in Cleveland's rotation. After giving up two hits and a run in the first inning, the left-hander was removed to ensure he could get a second up-and-down. Cantillo then allowed a home run to lead off the second frame but was able to build his pitch count up to 33 (22 strikes). He is competing with Logan Allen, who started the Guardians' other game Saturday, Slade Cecconi and Parker Messick for spots behind Tanner Bibee and Gavin Williams.

Cantillo has given up fewer than two runs in six consecutive outings; during that span, he's produced an impressive 1.32 ERA across 34 frames. Cantillo will be entering the rotation as a replacement for Luis L. Ortiz, who was placed on leave Thursday per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation. Ortiz will remain on leave through at least the All-Star break, so Cantillo could be in line for up to three starts to close out the first half if he performs well enough Thursday to warrant additional turns through the rotation. The 25-year-old lefty had previously posted a 3.81 ERA in 21 appearances out of the big-league bullpen earlier this season, but he's moved back into a starting role since being optioned to Triple-A on May 27. Over his four outings with Columbus, Cantillo owns a 3.86 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB in 11.2 innings. Cantillo hasn't covered more than 3.1 innings in any of those Triple-A appearances, so he'll likely be in line for a relatively light workload in his first start for Cleveland.
