Matt Wallner finally found regular playing time in the majors last season but underwhelmed compared to his elite power and strong eye at the plate. Still, he showed signs of improvement that could have him set for a breakout role if he can secure regular playing time. Wallner began last season surprisingly as the leadoff hitter and was off to a decent start (.847 OPS) in 18 games before missing a month due to a hamstring strain. He struggled initially when he returned (.698 OPS in his next 37 games), but improved in the second half with 12 home runs and a .806 OPS. However, batting average was an issue as he hit just .200 in the second half and .202 overall. Despite the problematic batting average and mediocre .775 OPS, there's a lot to like in his underlying metrics. Wallner reduced his problematic strikeout rate below 30% for the first time in his career (29.1%) and had the best contact rate of his career (66.1%). He was likely unlucky with a .228 BABIP as he still has elite power as he was in the 96th percentile in Bat Speed and 85th percentile in Barrel%. He also had a career-best 11.7% walk rate and improved from prior problematic platoon splits with a .790 OPS vs. LHP. Wallner has one of the strongest throwing arms in baseball, but below average range in right field which could limit his playing time. He's a streaky player given his three-true-outcomes profile and with his potential platoon issues and range limitations, he may struggle to find consistent playing time. If he can stay in the lineup, however, he's a candidate to have breakout 30-plus home run season.

    Wallner is expected to play everyday in right field and won't sit against left-handed pitchers early in the season, according to manager Derek Shelton via Matthew Leach of MLB.com. Wallner has had problems against left-handed pitching (career .641 OPS against LHP), so this is a good sign for his playing time. He did improve to a .790 OPS vs. LHP last season. Wallner reduced his problematic strikeout rate below 30 percent for the first time in his career (29.1 percent) last season and had the best contact rate of his career (66.1 percent), so there are promising signs he could have a breakout season despite posting just a .775 OPS last year.

It's reassuring to see Wallner having a good spring as a terrible spring in 2024 resulted in a slow start to the regular season and an early demotion to the minors. Wallner looks set to start in right field and could have a breakout season after some bad luck last year. Wallner was removed from Wednesday's game with right back spasms and wasn't part of Friday's lineup due to the issue. He'll now head to the injured list with what's being called a right oblique strain. The Twins are eliminated from postseason eligibility, meaning Wallner won't be able to return in 2025.
