Diamondbacks 12, Padres 7

PHOENIX -- Richie Sexson homered twice and was hungry for more.

"I missed it," the Arizona slugger said about his flyout in the seventh inning, which sent San Diego right fielder Brian Giles back to the warning track. "I got under it. I just hit it straight up in the air.

"It's just a little frustrating -- also two runs we would have got out of it, too, and you could use them against a club like that."

As it turned out, the Diamondbacks didn't need them. Sexson's three RBI and a season-high offensive splurge (14 hits) by his teammates were enough to give Arizona a 12-7 win over the Padres on Sunday.

"We feel like that's the kind of offense that we're capable of putting up there, and we needed that today," manager Bob Brenly said.

Sexson had a two-run homer to cap a four-run third inning, then homered to start another four-run outburst in the fifth. They gave him 17 multihomer games and his first since Arizona obtained him from Milwaukee on Dec. 1.

"It's contagious," Matt Kata said. "You know, Richie just starts swinging the bat, and the next thing you know everyone else is getting big hits."

Kata matched his career high with four RBI on a pair of singles and Luis Gonzalez and Danny Bautista had two-run doubles for the Diamondbacks, who took two of three for their second series win this season.

Elmer Dessens (1-2) overcame a ragged start to work 5 1/3 innings for his first victory since Sept. 20 -- four starts. He allowed four runs on six hits and a walk.

"I didn't have my good stuff the first couple of innings, but I keep my mind positive and try to shut it down," Dessens said. "A win is a win."

Ryan Klesko drove in a run with an RBI single off reliever Randy Choate in the Padres' five-run sixth.

Klesko was the first of two batters that Choate, Arizona's left-handed relief specialist faced. The other, pinch-hitter Jay Payton, doubled in a run to cut San Diego's deficit to 8-4.

Oscar Villarreal, the second reliever, gave up a broken-bat, two-run single to Ramon Hernandez and an RBI double to Khalil Greene, but then struck out pinch-hitter Kerry Robinson and Ramon Vazquez to leave the Padres a run short.

But the Diamondbacks scored four more runs in their half.

Eddie Oropesa walked the bases full to start the inning and Bautista, whose 17-game hitting streak is the longest in the majors, made it 10-7 with his opposite-field, two-run double off Antonio Osuna. Kata added his second two-run single off Osuna.

"We killed ourselves," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "I mean, we walked the first three. That's the last thing you want to see happen. He just couldn't find the plate."

All four Arizona runs in the third off Padres starter Brian Lawrence (2-2) were unearned after Greene booted Brent Mayne's leadoff grounder to short.

Two batters later, Kata singled, and he and Mayne scored on Gonzalez's two-out shot into the right-field corner. Sexson, the next batter, then hit the first pitch 421 feet onto a concourse behind the scoreboard in right-center.

"It was short," Lawrence said about his four-inning stint. "That's about all I can say about it. I tried to do the best I could. They got some runs in the third, and I didn't have a chance to come back and overcome that."

In the fifth, Sexson hit an opposite-field homer off Jason Szuminski.

Chad Tracy added an RBI single before Kata's blooper dropped in between three players to send Arizona to an 8-2 lead.

The Diamondbacks, who have given up the most walks in the National League, paid for a free pass early when Dessens walked Vazquez leading off the game.

Mark Loretta followed with a double, and Brian Giles hit a sacrifice fly.

Klesko, who beat Arizona with a two-run double in the ninth inning Saturday night, led off the second with another double to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ramon Hernandez.

Notes

Five of Sexson's homers have given Arizona a lead, and he has one game-tying shot. ... Lawrence made his 100th appearance, including 84 starts. ... The Padres start their second homestand of the season Monday, with Montreal visiting San Diego for four games and the New York Mets for three. ... The Diamondbacks have issued 92 walks in 18 games, including 46 by the bullpen.
