Beltre, Encarnacion hit three-run homers in Dodgers' blowout

  •

LOS ANGELES -- Jose Lima helped the Los Angeles Dodgers forget about Hideo Nomo's cracked fingernail.

Lima allowed two hits in eight scoreless innings in a spot start for Nomo, and the Dodgers got three-run homers from Adrian Beltre and Juan Encarnacion on Saturday night in a 10-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"I don't want to take the credit, even though I pitched well," said Lima, who has been coming out of the bullpen for most of the first two months of the season.

"They gave me the opportunity to go out there and do my job," he said. "I stopped the bleeding. Whatever they want me to do, I'll do. If they want me to be the bat boy, I'll be the bat boy."

Paul Lo Duca was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI, and Shawn Green also drove in two runs to help the Dodgers end a four-game losing streak.

Lima (4-1) retired 20 of his first 22 batters. The only hits he allowed were two-out doubles by Scott Hairston in the third inning, and Steve Finley in the seventh.

The 11-year veteran right-hander signed a minor league contract in January with the Dodgers and made the club at the end of spring training. He struck out seven and walked one in his fourth start.

"He wasn't overpowering. He was just getting outs," Luis Gonzalez said. "He wasn't falling behind anybody. He was around the plate and basically just had us hitting weak groundballs and short flyballs to the outfield. I think Hairston's double was probably the hardest hit ball all night."

Lima threw 112 pitches and was replaced by Eric Gagne, who put runners on second and third before in the ninth before striking out the last three batters and completing the three-hitter. It was the Dodgers' fourth shutout this season, and the fourth pitched against the Diamondbacks.

Two defensive plays stood out in Lima's gem.

Encarnacion robbed Matt Kata of extra bases leading off the game with a fully extended diving catch in right field. Brent Mayne was robbed of a hit up the middle by second baseman Alex Cora, who backhanded the grounder and made a backhanded flip to shortstop Cesar Izturis for the throw to first base for the first out in the third.

"When Encarnacion made that catch, I thought that something special's going to happen to me tonight," Lima said. "Then, when Hairston hit the double, I said, 'Forget about the no-hitter, now focus on throwing seven great innings and doing the job."'

Hairston took over at second base in the for Kata, who dislocated his left shoulder in the second inning while diving to make a play on Cora's single. Kata has appeared at second base in 32 of 36 games since Roberto Alomar's right hand was broken by a pitch from Milwaukee's Ben Sheets.

"It's part of the game," Kata said. "I only know one way to play the game, and that's hard. So I guess things like this are going to happen. Personally, I'm down and upset, especially when I've started to figure things out at the plate the last couple of games."

Los Angeles scored its first four runs in the third inning against Brandon Webb (2-5).

Milton Bradley lined a two-out single just past Webb's head with two outs, stole second and scored on Green's single. Lo Duca singled and Beltre followed with a drive to left-center for his 12th homer.

Webb was charged with six runs and eight hits in four-plus innings, while remaining winless in seven road starts this season. The right-hander was pulled in the fifth after allowing a single by Izturis, a walk to Bradley and Green's second RBI single.

Jose Valverde, demoted from the closer's role Friday by manager Bob Brenly, relieved Webb and gave up an RBI single to Lo Duca. One out later, Encarnacion wrapped his seventh homer around the left-field pole to extend the Dodgers' cushion to 9-0.

Notes

  • Bradley left with a sprained left ankle after trying to break up a double play in the sixth, but manager Jim Tracy said he might be able to play Sunday.
  • The Diamondbacks already had eight players on the disabled list before Kata's injury.
  • Dodgers LF and leadoff hitter Dave Roberts played for the first time since reinjuring his right hamstring running out a triple May 4. It was only the 14th time in 67 games this season that Los Angeles started its regular eight position players (10-4).
