KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Losing Tomo Okha to a painful broken arm made it difficult for the Montreal Expos to celebrate their first doubleheader sweep in more than a year.
Tony Batista homered twice and Sun-Woo Kim pitched 4 1/3 perfect innings in relief of Ohka, leading the Expos to a 7-2 victory in the nightcap Thursday. In the opener, Zach Day pitched a six-hitter for his second career shutout and the Expos got 16 hits in an 8-0 win.
Montreal pitchers issued only one walk in 18 innings while gaining their first doubleheader sweep in more than a year.
"Losing Tomo like that sort of takes a lot of the happiness away," said left fielder Brad Wilkerson, who homered and drove in three runs in the opener.
Ohka, who had not lost in six starts since April 29, was hit in the forearm by Carlos Beltran's line drive in the third inning and taken away in obvious pain. After the game, team physician Dr. Bruce Thomas said he had sustained a fracture of the radius bone at the bottom of the forearm just above the wrist of his pitching hand.
"He was in a lot of pain when he came off and he handled it well," Thomas said.
Doctors were putting the arm in a splint and the Expos planned to take Okha with them to Seattle, where they begin a three-game series on Friday.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to bring him with us and watch him through the weekend and get him to our hand specialist," Thomas said.
Surgery, which seemed likely, would put him out at least three months, Thomas said.
In the meantime, Angel Berroa's home run off Luis Ayala in the eighth inning of the nightcap insured that the Royals would not be shut out at home in both ends of a doubleheader for the first time in team history.
It was the first doubleheader sweep by the Expos since beating Cincinnati twice on April 19, 2003 in Puerto Rico.
Losing two to the team with the worst record in major league baseball was obviously dispiriting to the Royals.
"This is the worst two games I've ever been a part of in baseball history, in my baseball history," Royals first baseman Ken Harvey said.
"I don't know. I don't know how to explain it. They're just the worst two games I've ever been a part of."
Batista homered off Jimmy Gobble (3-4) leading off the second inning of the second game and added a two-run shot in the sixth for his 12th career multihomer game. Endy Chavez had a sacrifice fly in the third inning and Jose Vidro an RBI single in the seventh ahead of Batista's seventh home run.
Brian Schneider's two-run double off Jason Grimsley made it 7-1 in the ninth.
Gobble went 7 1/3 innings, giving up six hits and five runs.
Day, whose only other shutout was May 1, 2003, at Milwaukee, got 16 groundouts after the opener - a makeup of a rainout on Thursday - was delayed nearly two hours at the start by rain.
"You always worry in a doubleheader because it's very difficult to keep players up for two games, especially with the rain delay," Montreal manager Frank Robinson said. "It was very gratifying to see them jump out early like that."
Robinson was also gratified to see his pitchers allow only one walk in two games.
"That's darn good pitching. I mean that sincerely," he said. "That's how you hold a team down when you don't give them those free baserunners and make them earn what they get."
Wilkerson homered and drove in three runs in the opener for the Expos.
Jamey Carroll, getting a rare start at second base, scored three runs and had three of Montreal's 16 hits. Orlando Cabrera also had three hits.
Day (5-6) struck out four and walked none, the 10th time in 12 starts this season he's allowed three runs or fewer. He's thrown 13 straight scoreless innings.
Dennys Reyes (2-1) allowed 11 hits and five runs in 6 2/3 innings in the opener for the Royals.
"It was tough after waiting two hours. It seemed like everything I threw, they hit," Reyes said.
Batista made it 5-0 in the seventh with a sacrifice fly off Reyes. The Expos added three in the eighth on Wilkerson's leadoff homer off Nate Field, Vidro's RBI single and a throwing error by left fielder Byron Gettis.
Cabrera had an RBI single in the first, and Reyes walked Carroll with the bases loaded. Vidro's groundout made it 3-0 in the second, then Wilkerson hit an RBI single in the fifth.
Notes
The 16 hits in the opener were one shy of Montreal's season high. ... Harvey went 0-for-4 in the opener in his first game since colliding with Grimsley on Sunday, ending his career-best 15-game hitting streak. But Harvey doubled off Ohka in the first inning of the nightcap. ... The Expos have won six straight against left-handed starters.
