Guillen, Anderson get Washburn his first shutout as Angels pound ChiSox

  •

CHICAGO -- Jarrod Washburn waited a long time to pitch his first career shutout.

His Anaheim Angels teammates made things easy Wednesday night.

Jose Guillen homered twice and drove in five runs, and Garret Anderson hit his 200th career homer to back Washburn's four-hitter in a 12-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.

"I didn't need them all tonight, but I'll still take them," Washburn said.

Washburn (9-4) struck out six and walked two in his fifth career complete game and first this season. He had started 145 games in seven seasons without pitching a shutout, an Angels record.

Anaheim catcher Bengie Molina grounded into a 5-4-3 triple play in the sixth inning. With runners at first and second, Molina hit a hard one-hopper to Joe Crede, who stepped on third and threw a strike to Juan Uribe at second. Uribe's relay to first easily beat Molina, one of the slowest players in the majors.

It was the first triple play for the White Sox since June 6, 1996, at Boston. Anaheim hadn't hit into a triple play since Aug. 25, 1992, at Baltimore.

"You don't see many of those," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "And probably very rarely do you see that one, 5-4-3."

Washburn, who has the Angels' best career winning percentage at 65-45 (.590), was very aware of his record. He said he ignored Scioscia when he came to talk to him after the eighth inning, just in case he wanted to pull him.

"I'm very happy," Washburn said. "Every time I go out there my goal is to throw a shutout. I've done my job once now. I got a lot of starts to finally get one. I've been close a lot of times."

Scioscia said it was the best game he's seen Washburn pitch in their five years together.

"As far as going after a tough, right-handed hitting lineup, and the way those guys can break open a game at any time, and knowing what he wanted to do out there, this is by far the best game I've ever seen him pitch," Scioscia said.

Guillen tied a career high for RBI to lead the Angels to their second straight win over the White Sox, who have dropped five in a row overall. It was Chicago's worst loss of the season. The White Sox have scored just nine runs in the past six games.

The White Sox had homered in a franchise-best 23 straight home games. They lead the majors with 71 homers at home.

Guillen hit both of his homers off starter Scott Schoeneweis, who came off the disabled list to face his former team for the second time this season. Guillen went 3-for-3 with a double and scored three times before leaving for a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Guillen hit a two-run shot in the second inning, then a three-run drive in the third after Vladimir Guerrero's RBI single. It was Guillen's fourth career multihomer game.

Schoeneweis (5-7) lost his fifth straight decision, giving up six runs and five hits in five innings. The left-hander went on the disabled list June 25 with inflammation in his left elbow. Schoeneweis and Washburn are close friends.

"It's pretty ironic it came against him," Washburn said.

Tim Salmon knocked in Guillen in the sixth with an RBI single.

Anderson's home run was his sixth of the season and came in the seventh inning off White Sox reliever Felix Diaz. It scored Chone Figgins, who singled.

Anderson retrieved the ball after a fan threw it back on the field.

"I'll throw it in the garage with all the rest of them," Anderson said.

Robb Quinlan hit a two-run double in the ninth, and Jeff DaVanon added a sacrifice fly.

Notes

  • Salmon went 0-for-2 against Schoeneweis, extending his hitless streak against left-handers to 39 at-bats.
  • Guillen's last multihomer game came on Aug. 16, 2003, with Oakland against Toronto. He's had five RBI three times, most recently on Sept. 9, 2002, with Cincinnati against Pittsburgh.
  • White Sox slugger Frank Thomas sat out with inflammation in his left ankle. He will probably miss Thursday's game as well, but is expected to return to the lineup Friday.
  • Thomas and teammate Paul Konerko finished second and third, respectively, behind Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui in Internet fan voting for the final spot on the AL All-Star team.
