Padres win in 15 on Nevin's bases-loaded knock

CBS wire reports

SAN DIEGO -- Phil Nevin finally delivered something San Diego had missed most of Friday night: a timely hit.

Nevin lined a one-out, bases-loaded single in the 15th inning to lift the Padres to a 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, who had their six-game winning streak snapped.

"We just needed some guys to step up with some timely hits," Nevin said. "We had a lot of hits, but not too many of them were timely."

Nevin, who earlier extended his career-high hitting streak to 13 games, lined Brandon Lyon's fastball into left field to score Xavier Nady.

"If that one got away, that would be hard to take," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "Especially with the great pitching we had."

The Padres had a season-high 20 hits, but stranded 19 runners, also a season high. San Diego's bullpen was stellar in extra innings, as Chris Hammond (2-0) and three other relievers combined to retire the final 16 Arizona batters.

The winning rally started when Nady drew a leadoff walk against Lyon. Dave Roberts laid down a sacrifice bunt and Mark Loretta then blooped a single to center field. Luis Terrero dove for the ball but could only field it on a hop. Lyon intentionally walked Brian Giles before Nevin hit a 1-1 fastball.

Lyon (0-2), the major-league leader with 10 saves, was the seventh Diamondbacks pitcher.

"You don't want a leadoff walk," he said. "You still have to go out and get three outs and give your team a chance to win. Unfortunately, I couldn't do that tonight."

Loretta tied his career high with five hits.

Hammond pitched two perfect innings and combined with relievers Scott Linebrink, Rudy Seanez and Akinori Otsuka to allow just one hit with six strikeouts and one walk in six innings.

"If you lose, you lose, really," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said about the end of his team's winning streak. "It hurts because we used our whole bullpen."

Arizona tied the game in the ninth. Shawn Green drew a one-out walk off Trevor Hoffman and moved to second on a groundout before pinch-hitter Tony Clark lined a double down the right-field line to tie the score at 4-all.

It was Hoffman's second blown save in five opportunities.

The Padres wasted a strong outing by Jake Peavy, who allowed three runs and six hits and struck out seven with one walk. He retired the final eight batters he faced and drew a key two-out walk during the Padres' three-run fourth inning.

Peavy was three outs away from winning the rematch of last Saturday's pitcher's duel with Brandon Webb in Arizona, which the Diamondbacks won 2-1. Neither pitcher received a decision in that game.

Nevin homered to left field leading off the fifth inning to give San Diego a 4-2 lead.

The Padres erased a 2-0 deficit in the fourth. After a one-out single by Ramon Hernandez and a fielder's choice, Sean Burroughs singled. Peavy fell behind 1-2 in the count before Webb walked him to load the bases. Roberts then lifted a fly ball that fell into shallow center, scoring two runs.

Loretta followed with a blooper into right-center field that scored Peavy for a 3-2 lead.

Doubles by Craig Counsell and Luis Gonzalez in the first inning gave Arizona its first run. Troy Glaus hit his seventh homer leading off the fourth, tying him with Chicago's Derrek Lee for the NL lead.

Chad Tracy tripled one out after Glaus' homer, but was out at home when he was officially caught stealing on what looked to be an aborted squeeze play with Quinton McCracken at bat.

Webb wasn't nearly as sharp as he was during his last matchup with Peavy. The right-hander allowed four runs and 12 hits in six innings and constantly had to pitch out of trouble. Webb struck out three and walked two.

Green had a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning that pulled the Diamondbacks to within 4-3.

  • Padres SS Geoff Blum left the game in the first inning with a bruised chest after colliding with LF Ryan Klesko. The pair were pursuing Counsell's fly ball to shallow left field. Television replays showed Klesko's left forearm slam into Blum's chest. Blum lay face down on the grass for about two minutes before walking off under his own power.
  • Loretta also had five hits on Sept. 8, 2000, at the Chicago Cubs.
  • When Peavy and Webb matched up last Saturday, each allowed one just one run. Webb pitched eight innings and Peavy went seven.
