Tigers 3, Diamondbacks 2 (11 innings)

CBS wire reports

DETROIT -- Marcus Thames got another chance with the bases loaded and took advantage of it.

After striking out with the bases full of Tigers in the seventh inning, Thames singled over a drawn-in outfield in the 11th to cap a two-run rally and help Detroit beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 Saturday night.

"Finally, I went out and did something to try and help the ballclub," Thames said. "The bases were loaded again and I just tried to relax and put the ball in play this time and not try to do too much. The last pitch I just relaxed and got a fastball and put the bat on the ball."

Rondell White's double down the right-field line scored Ivan Rodriguez to tie it at 2 with one out. Rodriguez led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Dmitri Young was then walked intentionally and Brian Bruney (0-2) walked Craig Monroe.

Thames then lined a pitch deep into left-center field to score White.

"It happens," Bruney said. "It's not going to be the last time we lose a game in the last inning. We just have to come back tomorrow."

Thames has struggled at the plate this season with a .200 average.

"I was just trying to make sure I made good contact with it," he said. "The first two fastballs he just threw by me because I was trying to do a little too much. I stepped out of the box and told myself to relax."

Franklyn German (2-0) got the win despite giving up Koyie Hill's RBI single in the top of the 11th.

"I almost cried I was so excited," German said.

Diamondbacks starter Shawn Estes allowed a run and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Tigers starter Nate Robertson matched him into the seventh, giving up a run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He held Arizona hitless for the first 4 1/3 innings before Royce Clayton's double into the left-field corner. He walked four and struck out five.

"Great game. The pitching was very good," Tigers' manager Alan Trammell said.

Arizona loaded the bases against Robertson in the seventh on one-out singles by Tony Clark, Shawn Green and Clayton. Luis Terrero then drove in pinch-runner Matt Kata with a sacrifice fly.

Estes also pitched scoreless ball into the seventh.

Rodriguez, who was 3-for-5, led off with a triple into the right-center gap and scored on Carlos Guillen's single. After a flyout, Young singled and Monroe walked to load the bases.

Lance Cormier relieved Estes and struck out Thames and Omar Infante to end the inning.

Brandon Inge doubled with one out in the Detroit eighth and went to third on a groundout. But Guillen was walked intentionally and White grounded into a forceout at second.

Arizona loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth against Ugueth Urbina but couldn't push across the go-ahead run. Green singled with one out and Urbina walked pinch-hitter Luis Gonzalez and Hill before Craig Counsell popped out.

"It's always tough," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "When you play close games like that, little things are going to beat you and little things are going to win for you."

  • Tigers RF Magglio Ordonez, on the DL recovering from a hernia operation, began rehabilitation in a pool on Wednesday.
  • Clayton got his 300th career double.
  • White stretched his hitting streak to 10 games (14-for-41, .341).
