Lee comes back with a bang as Cubs cruise past Marlins

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
  •

MIAMI -- Even when Derrek Lee's timing is off, he's on.

Lee hit his 26th homer in his return to the lineup, Todd Walker homered and drove in three runs, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Florida Marlins 8-2 on Saturday night.

Kerry Wood (2-2) limited the Marlins to six hits -- including Jeff Conine's solo homer -- in 7 2/3 innings for his first win in 2½ months. Chicago won its second straight following an eight-game losing streak.

Lee, second in the majors to Atlanta's Andruw Jones in homers, returned after missing three games because of irritation in his left shoulder. His solo shot off rookie Scott Olsen in the fourth gave him 68 RBI.

"I felt like I was in slow motion a little bit," Lee said. "Hopefully, it'll come back quick."

Cubs rookie Adam Greenberg was hit in the head by the first pitch he faced in the major leagues in the ninth.

"What a way to start your career," manager Dusty Baker said. "I hope he's OK. I'm sure he'll never forget that opening at-bat."

Greenberg, pinch hitting for Will Ohman, had no chance to get out of the way of Valerio De los Santos' first pitch, which struck him on the side of the helmet.

"That was not supposed to happen," De los Santos said. "I don't know if it was the weather, but that ball got away from me. I want to know if he's 100 percent. It really hurt me. It hurt him, but it hurt me, too."

Greenberg was given a warm ovation from the crowd of 22,863 when he got up after remaining on the ground for several minutes and walked off the field.

"He never lost consciousness and he was able to answer questions for us right out there on the field," Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal said.

Greenberg's parents rushed into Chicago's training room after the game to see their son, who was getting ice treatments.

"I'm sure it was pretty nerve wracking seeing their son get hit in the head, especially in his first at-bat in the major leagues, but they were just checking on him," Lee said. "He's fine."

Marlins manager Jack McKeon was ejected by third base umpire Jerry Layne when he came out to argue ruling of a fair ball on Jerry Hairston's tying RBI double off Guillermo Mota (1-2) with two outs in the seventh.

Walker followed with his third homer of the season to put Chicago ahead 4-2. He added an RBI double in the ninth and Jose Macias hit a two-run double off Jim Mecir to make it 7-2. Michael Barrett's run-scoring single increased the Cubs' lead to six.

No rain fell during the game, which was played with a 26 mph wind blowing from right field to left in the wake of Hurricane Dennis moving up the Gulf of Mexico.

Wood, who last won on April 24, a 5-2 win in Pittsburgh, struck out four in his third start since returning from a right shoulder strain.

After Lee's homer put the Cubs up 1-0, Conine tied it on his second homer of the season on a 3-2 pitch from Wood leading off the fifth. The Marlins took a 2-1 lead later in the inning on Juan Pierre's two-out RBI single.

Olsen held Chicago to four hits in six innings in his third major league start.

Notes

  • Cubs 3B Aramis Ramirez was replaced by Macias in the seventh after he fouled a ball off his left big toe in the sixth. X-rays were negative.
  • The game began with three umpires because of the late arrival of Casey Moser, a replacement for Paul Emmel, who had to attend to personal matters. Moser, a Pacific Coast League umpire, arrived in the fifth inning and took over at second base from Layne, who moved to third.
  • Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano pinch ran for Greenberg and scored on Walker's RBI double.
  • Conine started in right field in place of Juan Encarnacion, who was hit by a pitch on his left forearm in the ninth inning of Friday's 9-6 loss. Encarnacion said he was available to hit.
