Marlins explode for 16 runs in Beckett's return

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jack McKeon has envisioned the scenario often this season, hoping his Florida Marlins would eventually find pitching and hitting success on the same night.

The manager received quite a glimpse of the team's potential when things do come together as intended.

Carlos Delgado and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back homers in a five-run fifth inning, Josh Beckett won in his return from the disabled list, and the Marlins beat the San Francisco Giants 16-4 on Saturday night.

Cabrera followed Delgado's splash homer with a solo shot to center, the fifth time Florida hit back-to-back homers this year and the fourth by Delgado and Cabrera.

"It's really nice," Delgado said. "It seems like the first half we really couldn't put it together. The last six or seven games, we've put it together. Hopefully we can build from here."

Mike Lowell had three RBI and Juan Encarnacion drove in two runs and doubled among his three hits in Florida's highest offensive output of the year. The Marlins had 20 hits and reached double digits in runs for the second time this month to win for the third time in four games.

Ray Durham homered to the walkway over the wall in right in the second to extend his hitting streak to eight games, but the Giants couldn't muster much else against Beckett (9-6).

The right-hander was activated from the disabled list before the game to make his first start in 18 days. He pitched six strong innings to match his career high for wins, which he also accomplished the past two seasons. He faced the minimum in all but the second inning and didn't walk a batter for the third time this year, allowing four hits and striking out seven in the 67-pitch effort.

Beckett had been on the DL -- his second stint this season -- since July 6 with a strained left stomach muscle. He also was sidelined with a blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand.

Delgado sent a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall and into the waters of McCovey Cove for his 21st homer of the year, the 11th splash homer by an opponent and the third this season. Barry Bonds has 31 splash homers.

"That was over to almost Alcatraz by the time they picked it up," McKeon said.

Cabrera homered for the second straight night and is 5-for-6 with four RBI and five runs scored in the first two games of the series.

"Cabrera continues to be unstoppable," McKeon said. "Now, we're hitting, and the pitching hasn't been as sharp. Pretty soon, they will fall into place."

Beckett's offense staked him to a 3-0 lead before he'd thrown a pitch.

Cabrera and Encarnacion each hit RBI doubles off Brad Hennessey (3-3) in the first, and Paul Lo Duca drove in a run with a groundout. Beckett also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the Marlins' five-run fifth, when the team batted around.

"I remember a concert of line drives that took place tonight," Giants manager Felipe Alou said.

Hennessey was booed by the sellout crowd of 43,017 following the two homers, then fans cheered when Alou headed to the mound to replace him with Kirk Rueter, the demoted former starter who will get another chance in the rotation next week.

"It seems like anything you threw was getting hit tonight," Hennessey said. "And walking two guys in the first inning didn't help me. ... The slider to Cabrera was the best pitch I threw, and he hit it out."

Rueter immediately gave up an RBI double to Lowell, and there was plenty more booing to follow. Center fielder Alex Sanchez's throwing error in Florida's four-run sixth led to a run. He could be the odd man out when Marquis Grissom comes off the DL next week.

San Francisco's Pedro Feliz, who had homered in three straight games, just missed hitting one out when his second-inning double reached the top of the wall in right-center, then fell back onto the warning track.

Michael Tucker followed with an RBI single that got the Giants within 3-2, then Beckett retired the next nine batters -- six on strikeouts.

Notes

  • Sanchez has a sore throwing elbow and was scheduled for an MRI on Sunday.
  • Giants 1B J.T. Snow left the game with a sore lower back and is unlikely to play Sunday.
  • After getting caught stealing in the second, Juan Pierre stole his 30th base in the fifth.
  • Marlins SS Alex Gonzalez was a late scratch with a sore right elbow. He was replaced by Damion Easley.
  • Giants GM Brian Sabean is still working to acquire a starting pitcher and a left-handed bat.
  • The Giants retired the jersey of Hall of Fame RHP Gaylord Perry before the game, the 10th player or manager to have their number retired in the club's 123-year history and the first since Orlando Cepeda in 1999.
  • It was the second-largest regular-season crowd in the ballpark's history.
