DETROIT -- The Seattle Mariners found the perfect way to overcome a trying day: win.

Just hours after starter Ryan Franklin was suspended for 10 days for violating baseball's steroid policy Tuesdy, Raul Ibanez hit a two-run single in a three-run eighth inning to lift the Mariners over the Detroit Tigers 4-1.

"It was nice to play baseball." Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said. "This isn't the first club things like this have happened to, and it won't be the last. It's a credit to our players and coaching staff that they kept their minds on business and were ready to play."

Jeff Harris pitched five scoreless inning for the win in his major league debut. He was pitching in relief of Jorge Campillo, who was making his first big league start. Campillo left after the first inning with a strained right elbow. He will be evaluated on Wednesday.

Jeremy Reed's hustle on a sacrifice bunt helped spark a three-run rally in the eighth inning and secure the victory.

Reed singled leading off. Dave Hansen then bunted the ball in front of the plate, which third baseman Brandon Inge fielded and threw to first.

Seeing third base unoccupied, Reed never slowed down, running from first to third and beating a throw from first baseman Chris Shelton to catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who had sprinted to third.

"We had talked about a situation like that, about what to do if it happened, and luckily it did" Reed said. "Hansen got the bunt down and when I took off I saw no one was at third. I was going."

After a walk to Wiki Gonzalez, Reed scored on a double by Yuniesky Betancourt. Gonzalez and Betancourt scored on Ibanez's single with the bases loaded.

Ibanez singled on an 0-2 count off Detroit reliever Jamie Walker.

"He's a big league hitter, and I'm a big league pitcher," Walker said. "He beat me. I wanted it down and off the plate, but it spun. That's what good hitters are supposed to do."

Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco, who signed a four-year, $18.4 million contract extension earlier in the day, had two of the Tigers' six hits, including a leadoff double in the bottom of the first.

Julio Mateo (3-4), the third of five Seattle pitchers, worked the seventh inning for the victory. Eddie Guardado got three outs for his 25th save in 26 chances and 24th straight.

Detroit starter Jason Johnson (7-9) allowed five hits, walked three -- one intentionally -- and struck out one in 7 2/3 innings.

Harris, called up earlier in the day when reliever Jeff Nelson went on bereavement leave, allowed three singles in five innings in his major league debut. He struck out one and walked none.

"I kept telling myself to relax," Harris said. "I hit my spots and gave the team a chance to win. Wiki called a great game for me."

Adrian Beltre homered in the second inning off Johnson, who didn't allow another runner past first until the eighth.

Rodriguez tied it with a two-out homer in the seventh.

Notes

Detroit shortstop Carlos Guillen missed Tuesday's game after tending to a family matter in his native Venezuela. He's expected to be back in the lineup Wednesday. ... The Mariners recalled reliever Masao Kida from Triple-A Tacoma to replace Franklin. Kida pitched briefly for the Mariners in 2004 and for Detroit in 1999-00. ... Nelson will miss the Detroit series following the death of his father-in-law. ... After Tuesday's game, the Mariners are 37-23 this season when they hit a homer, 9-36 when they don't.
