DENVER -- The difference between the Chris Capuano who had been hit hard in his two previous starts and the one who threw seven shutout innings at hitter friendly Coors Field was simple.

"It was command of the baseball," Capuano said. "Just throwing strikes."

Capuano allowed six hits and didn't walk a batter over seven innings and drove in both runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.

"I had been too aggressive the past couple of starts," Capuano said. "I don't mean with pitches, but the mentality where you have your adrenaline going and you are almost rushing things. I just had to slow it down today."

Capuano (13-8), Dana Eveland, Jose Capellan and Derrick Turnbow combined for the 29th shutout in the 11 years Coors Field has been open.

Turnbow pitched the ninth for his 26th save.

Capuano had given up nine runs in losing his two previous starts. He matched a season high with eight strikeouts in winning for the first time since July 31.

"Chris was bound and determined to go right after the hitters, and at an offensive ballpark," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. "He got quick outs, was ahead in the count all night long, changed speeds well, and he was all the offense we needed, too."

Colorado's Jamey Wright (6-14) gave up two runs and three hits in seven innings and dropped to 0-3 in his last three starts. Colorado has lost six of seven games overall.

Wright, who has struggled at times with control and poor location, wouldn't apologize for the pitch that ultimately cost him the game.

"I wouldn't take that pitch back," Wright said. "It was a good changeup that he got in front of and the ball had eyes."

That was Capuano's two-out single with the bases loaded in the second. Carlos Lee doubled and Geoff Jenkins walked to open the inning and both moved up on a wild pitch as Russell Branyan struck out. After another out, Chad Moeller was intentionally walked to load the bases and Capuano slapped an 0-1 pitch past first baseman Todd Helton into right field to make it 2-0.

"I don't know how much skill was involved in that, but the last time up I hit a line drive and it was pretty hard," Capuano said.

Capuano worked out of trouble in the fourth when Helton and Matt Holliday singled with one out. He retired Garrett Atkins on a groundout and struck out Dustan Mohr to end the threat.

Atkins led off the seventh with a single and Todd Greene singled off the wall in left with one out. Third base coach Mike Gallego sent Atkins to the plate with Milwaukee second baseman Bill Hall holding the ball. Hall threw to third baseman Branyan, who retired Atkins in a rundown.

"We got in our own way," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "Mike was trying to steal a run and it didn't happen."

Notes

Milwaukee sent 3B Jeff Cirillo on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Nashville. ... Capuano has six hits and seven RBI this season. ... The Brewers won the season series 5-1. ... Cleveland claimed RHP Jason Young, Colorado's second-round selection in the 2000 June draft, on outright waivers.
