CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee manager Ned Yost barely had time to second-guess himself when the Brewers' lumbering lineup chased Florida ace Josh Beckett with a big rally.

After Corey Hart grounded into a double play in the first inning, Yost wondered whether he had erred in not flashing the bunt sign to try to scratch across a run for what he anticipated would be a pitchers' duel.

His doubts were erased when the Brewers scored six runs off Beckett in the fourth inning on their way to an 11-2 rout of the Florida Marlins on Tuesday night.

"Against a staff like that, it's probably about the farthest thing from your mind," Yost said of the blowout. "You really hope that your pitcher can hold you close and you can win a tight game."

Chris Capuano (14-8) held up his end, allowing two earned runs and eight hits in eight innings. He walked one and struck out eight, including slugger Carlos Delgado four times.

Capuano, the first Brewers pitcher to win 14 games since Cal Eldred in 1997, changed speeds and mixed his pitches to perfection -- in stark contrast to Beckett, whose curveball and changeup betrayed him, rendering his fastball equally ineffective.

Beckett (12-7) didn't make it out of the fourth, allowing seven runs, six of them earned, and eight hits in just 3 1/3 innings. He also allowed Carlos Lee's 28th homer leading off the second, Lee's first shot since Aug. 3.

"I said, 'I can't throw my curveball for a strike, so I'm going to stop throwing it,'" Beckett said. "Well, then my changeup was sub-par at best. ... So, now I'm dropping to one pitch. And they're standing out there pretty much waiting to get what I got because this is the big leagues.

"This is not the Little League World Series, which I think probably is where I should have been pitching today."

Geoff Jenkins' RBI single broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth and Bill Hall, inserted into the lineup at third base after Russell Branyan developed a stiff back following batting practice, doubled home two more runs. He then stole third and scored on catcher Paul Lo Duca's throwing error for a 5-1 lead.

Rickie Weeks' run-scoring single chased Beckett and brought on Randy Messenger. His first batter was Hart, who nearly grounded into his third double play in the first four innings. He hit a chopper to first baseman Delgado, whose throw to second hit a sliding Weeks and bounded into left field, allowing J.J. Hardy to score from second to make it 7-1.

Hall did his work on a full stomach. Yost told him a half hour before the game that he wasn't going to get a day off, after all.

"I was on my second piece of pizza. I had already eaten about 20 little small mini-tacos and a bowl of fruit," Hall said.

Hardy's two-run single in the seventh off Messenger made it 9-1. Ron Villone relieved Messenger and gave up RBI singles to Weeks and Hart as the Brewers batted around for the second time.

Capuano was perfect through three innings before allowing three singles to open the fourth, including Juan Pierre's bunt back to the mound for Florida's first hit. Pierre scored on Miguel Cabrera's single to tied it at 1-1.

Jeff Conine said the Marlins, who were coming off a 9-4 homestand against the NL West that put them in the thick of the wild-card race, would have to quickly forget this poor start to their trip.

"You have to, especially at this point in the season when you have so much at stake," he said. "It's just a bad game, come back tomorrow and win. You have to."

Brewers C Chad Moeller has a "daughter to be named later." His wife, Nicole, gave birth to the couple's second child on Monday, before they had settled on a name. ... Milwaukee CF Brady Clark (bruised ribs) took batting practice Tuesday for the first time since going on the DL Aug. 11. ... The Brewers are one of three teams (Arizona, Cincinnati) Beckett has failed to beat in his career. Beckett is 0-3 against the NL Central this season, having allowed 17 earned in 16 2/3 innings for a 9.18 ERA.
