Cintron's pinch-hit shot lifts D-Backs over Phillies

CBS wire reports

PHOENIX -- A team all too accustomed to double-digit losses pieced together a rare pitching gem on Saturday.

Alex Cintron hit a two-run, pinch homer and Brandon Webb threw seven sharp innings to help the Diamondbacks snap a season-high six-game losing streak by beating the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0.

Arizona won for the third time in 14 games. In that stretch, the Diamondbacks had allowed more than 10 runs six times, twice in the previous three games. They had not shut out an opponent since July 28 against the Cubs in Chicago.

"It's just a game that we needed to win just to get off this streak we've been in," Webb said. "No matter how we won it, 10-9, whatever, we just rally needed to win a ballgame."

The Phillies, starting the day with a 1½-game lead in the NL wild-card race, fell to 3-2 on a 14-day, 12-game trip.

Jon Lieber (12-12) retired his first 14 batters and blanked the Diamondbacks on three hits through six innings. But in the seventh, Chad Tracy doubled with one out and Cintron golfed a two-out fly ball barely over the glove of leaping right fielder Bobby Abreu for his third pinch-hit homer of the season.

On a 1-2 pitch, Lieber threw a slider low and inside going for the strikeout. The pitch was so low it almost bounced, Cintron said. "I honestly don't know how that ball went out."

Teammate Luis Gonzalez called it "a good 5-iron shot."

"I made the pitch where I wanted to," Lieber said. "He just put the bat right on the ball, Seriously, I thought it was a fly ball (out)."

Lieber fell to 0-7 in his career against Arizona, including 0-5 in Phoenix. He allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out six, walking one and hitting a batter.

"I've either got pounded by these guys or had some tough games like today," Lieber said. "It's just the way it goes. You can't really dwell on it. You just move on."

With his trademark sinker keeping the Phillies off balance, Webb (11-10) gave up five hits and walked four, one intentionally. He struck out six.

Jose Valverde came on to strike out two in the eighth, then pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save in seven chances.

Philadelphia loaded the bases against Webb in the second and seventh.

A single by Pat Burrell and double by Ryan Howard put runners on second and third with one out in the second. Webb struck out David Bell, then walked Todd Pratt intentionally to load the bases and bring up Lieber, hitting .057.

After running the count to 3-1, Lieber bounced out to end the inning.

In the seventh, singles by Howard and Pratt put runners at first and second with one out. Lieber struck out trying to bunt, and Jimmy Rollins walked. Kenny Lofton grounded out hard to second to end the threat.

Tracy's broken-bat, infield single ended Lieber's perfect start with two outs in the fifth.

Arizona loaded the bases in the sixth but came up empty. With two outs, Craig Counsell doubled, then Royce Clayton put down a bunt single that rolled dead just inside the third-base line. Gonzalez loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch, then Tony Clark flied out.

Philadelphia employed defensive shifts against Troy Glaus, Gonzalez, Tony Clark and Tracy, moving the infield far to the left against Glaus and far to the right against the others.

After the game, the Phillies announced they had acquired OF Michael Tucker from San Francisco for minor league RHP Kelvin Pichardo. ... Arizona OF Shawn Green missed his second game in a row following the birth of his daughter Chandler Rose on Friday. He is expected back in the lineup Sunday night. ... The Phillies lost to an NL West team for only the eighth time in 31 games this season. ... Arizona ended a six-game home losing streak to the Phillies and beat Philadelphia for only the third time in their last 13 meetings.
