Clark homers from both sides as D-Backs edge Rockies

PHOENIX -- Tony Clark isn't satisfied with what he has done this year -- no matter how amazed the Arizona Diamondbacks are by it.

Clark hit home runs from both sides of the plate, including a go-ahead shot in the seventh inning, and Chad Tracy went 4-for-4 with a homer Saturday to rally the Diamondbacks to a 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

"I've been fortunate," said Clark, who has hit four homers the last two games. "I'm not naive enough to think it's always going to fall in or the ball's always going to find a hole or that I'm always going to come through. It's a matter of controlling what you can.

"I'll enjoy everything once I made my last out. Until I make my last out, I'll always have work to do.

Clark, signed to a one-year contract as a pinch hitter and role player, is hitting .313 in 204 at-bats with 29 homers and 82 RBI.

"You look at his numbers and the amount of at-bats he's had, and it's ridiculous what this guy has done for us," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said.

Tracy hit a one-out homer to right to tie the game off reliever Randy Williams (3-1) in the seventh. Clark followed with a towering shot into the left-field stands from the right side to give the Diamondbacks a 6-5 lead.

Clark, who had his third two-homer game of the season on Friday, also had a three-run drive in the fifth from the left side that pulled the Diamondbacks within 5-4.

"He's hot, but he's getting pitches to hit," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "We leave it out over the plate right now and he's putting it into the seats. We can't play defense on the other side of the wall."

Clark became the second Arizona player to homer from both sides of the plate.

"Tony's been amazing," Tracy said. "I tell him all the time he's my favorite player."

Oscar Villareal (1-0) pitched a perfect seventh to earn his first win since Sept. 25, 2003, for Arizona, which won for the just the second time in six games.

Tim Worrell pitched a scoreless eighth and Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his eighth save in 10 chances.

Garrett Atkins hit his 13th homer and drove in three for the Rockies, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

"Tony's killed us it seems like the whole year," Atkins said.

Colorado wasted little time taking the lead against Arizona starter Claudio Vargas. Todd Helton doubled with two outs and scored on Holliday's single to right.

The Diamondbacks tied it in the third when Craig Counsell singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Tracy's infield single.

The Rockies used three straight hits -- consecutive doubles to lead off the fourth by Holliday and Atkins, and a two-run single by Todd Greene - to extend their lead to 3-1.

Atkins made it 5-1 in the fifth with a two-run, two-out homer into the stands above the Diamondbacks' left-field bullpen.

Vargas allowed five runs and eight hits in six innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Colorado starter Aaron Cook also struggled, surrendering four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits with three walks and a strikeout.
