CBS wire reports

MILWAUKEE -- Derrek Lee is one of the most feared hitters in the National League. Milwaukee's Doug Davis had no problem with the Chicago Cubs' star on Tuesday night.

Davis worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh inning, striking out Lee for the fourth time to end the threat and help the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-3 victory.

"He had struck him out the first three times up," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. "I was going to give him an opportunity to face him, and he struck him out again. That was the turning point of the game."

Davis (11-10) won for the second time in three starts after going 14 consecutive starts without a victory. The left-hander pitched seven innings, giving up two runs and seven hits, walking two and striking out 10, including Lee four times.

"Mainly what I did was scout on him, and throw the ball where he couldn't hurt me," Davis said of his mastery of Lee, who leads the NL in hitting (.339) and is second in homers (44).

Leading 4-2 in the seventh, Davis gave up a leadoff double to Corey Patterson and then walked the next two hitters to load the bases.

"I'm sure Ned was pulling his hair out," Davis said.

That's when Davis went to work.

Neifi Perez hit a grounder to third, and Bill Hall threw home for the forceout.

After the game, Davis admitted that he thought there already was one out when facing Perez, and was hoping to get him to hit a groundball that would lead to a double play.

When Hall went home instead of going for the double play, Davis was confused.

"I told him you should have just touched the bag and threw to first," Davis said. Hall set him straight and then Davis looked at the scoreboard. "Maybe not knowing is better."

Todd Walker then popped out to shortstop, and Davis ended the inning by striking out Lee with his 119th and final pitch of the game.

"That hurt," Chicago manager Dusty Baker said of the inning.

The Cubs were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Derrick Turnbow pitched the ninth for his 33rd save.

Chicago starter Jerome Williams (5-9) gave up three runs in the first inning in failing to win for the third consecutive start. He gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings.

Carlos Lee had two sacrifice flies and Brady Clark scored two runs for Milwaukee.

Clark led off the first with a single and moved to third on J.J. Hardy's broken-bat single. One batter later, Lee's sacrifice fly made it 1-0. Geoff Jenkins followed with a two-run home run, his 23rd.

"It was gone, so I tried to go back out there and put up some more zeros," Williams said.

The Brewers made it 4-0 in the fifth on Lee's second sacrifice fly.

The Cubs pulled within 4-2 in the sixth on Nomar Garciaparra's seventh homer, a two-run shot.

Lyle Overbay's 19th homer made it 5-2 in the seventh.

Matt Murton's sixth homer, off reliever Matt Wise in the eighth, brought Chicago within 5-3.

The victory moved the Brewers into third place in the NL Central, one-half game ahead of Chicago. ... The Brewers purchased the contract of RHP Gary Glover from Triple-A Nashville before the game. To make room on their 40-man roster, they transferred RHP Ben Sheets to the 60-day DL. ... Hardy singled in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to a career-high nine games. ... Cubs C Michael Barrett returned to the starting lineup. He had been out since Sept. 14 when he was hit in the head with a pitch.
