Mariners score in eighth, hand Tigers eighth loss in a row

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

DETROIT -- Jamie Bubela might have been the most surprised person at Comerica Park on Friday night.

The rookie scored from third base on a double-play grounder, breaking an eighth-inning tie as the Seattle Mariners posted a 2-1 victory over the slumping Detroit Tigers.

Rene Rivera led off the inning against Chris Spurling (3-4) with his third single of the game, and Bubela pinch ran for him. Vic Darensbourg relieved, and Ichiro Suzuki's single moved Bubela to third.

Jeremy Reed grounded back to Darensbourg, who appeared to have a chance to trap Bubela off third, but he turned to second to start a 1-6-3 double play as the run scored.

"When he looked at me, I assumed he was going to throw to the plate, and I was thinking about how long I could stay in the rundown," Bubela said. "Then he threw to second."

The run led to Detroit's eighth consecutive loss and further frustrated manager Alan Trammell.

"You want to get that runner," Trammell said. "Yes, they might still have runners on first and second with one out, but you will take your chances with that instead of letting the go-ahead run score that late."

While Trammell was talking to the media, his players held a 45-minute closed-door meeting in the clubhouse.

"We ironed some things out," said pitcher Mike Maroth, the only player to comment on the meeting. "We got together and talked as a team. That has to be beneficial."

Ryan Franklin (7-15) ended an eight-start winless streak to post his first victory since July 30. He allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, struck out five and walked none.

"That felt good," he said. "It has been a while since I've gotten one in the win column."

Eddie Guardado, Seattle's fifth pitcher, recorded three outs for his 34th save, striking out pinch-hitter Marcus Thames with a runner on second to end the game.

Seattle is 3-6 on its season-high 11-game trip. Detroit dropped to 4-19 in September.

Detroit loaded the bases off J.J. Putz with one out in the eighth on two walks and an infield single.

George Sherrill relieved, and Carlos Guillen pinch hit in his first appearance since going on the disabled list on Aug. 10. Guillen, who had been sidelined with a sore right knee, struck out. Julio Mateo came in and forced Ivan Rodriguez to ground into an inning-ending forceout.

"That was big," Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said. "Sherrill gets a big strikeout against a very good hitter and then Mateo gets one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball in a situation like that."

Tigers starter Sean Douglass allowed one run and four hits in six innings.

Seattle went ahead in the third when Jose Lopez led off with a double and scored on Rivera's single. Omar Infante's eighth homer tied the score in the bottom half, a drive into the bullpens in left.

Detroit threatened in the sixth when Chris Shelton hit a two-out triple off the center-field wall, but Magglio Ordonez grounded out on the next pitch.

Craig Monroe kept the score tied in the top of the seventh when he reached well over the left-field fence to take a homer away from Lopez.

"I haven't seen the replay, but I guess I got up pretty high," Monroe said. Since the Tigers lost, "now it doesn't mean anything."

  • Infante's homer was the 147th to land short of the original fence in left since the new wall was erected before the 2003 season. Detroit has hit 67 and allowed 80.
  • Dmitri Young, who has been limited to pinch-hitting duties in the last two weeks because of a sore hamstring, told Trammell that he was unavailable for Friday's game. "It's not getting any better, and as cold as it was tonight, it just wouldn't get loose." The temperature was 67 at game time and in the high 50s by the ninth inning.
