BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles were never really worried about Daniel Cabrera's effectiveness, even after he issued 16 walks in his first two starts this season.

After the right-hander's performance Monday night, the only people who have to worry about Cabrera are those who must face him.

Cabrera displayed surprising control while pitching seven innings of five-hit ball, and the Orioles got a home run from Miguel Tejada in a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Cabrera (1-1) came in with an 11.37 ERA after walking seven in 1 1/3 innings against Boston and nine more against Tampa Bay on April 12. Facing the Angels, he struck out six, did not allow an earned run and yielded his only walk with two outs in the seventh.

"Everyone made a big deal out of the first two starts, saying he was going to walk everyone in the ballpark. Daniel doesn't do that all the time," Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo said. "Tonight we got what we really expect from him."

Cabrera attributed his sharper control to several sessions with pitching coach Leo Mazzone.

"I worked with Leo the last seven days, and it worked today," Cabrera said. "Everything was perfect. I cut down on the walks and threw strikes."

Brian Roberts drove in two runs for the Orioles, who built a 4-0 lead in the first two innings against Jeff Weaver (0-2). Baltimore took three of four from Los Angeles after going 2-4 against the Angels a year ago.

"They're obviously deeper in a lot of areas than they were last year, and they're going to come right at you," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said.

Baltimore's victory came at a price. Outfielder David Newhan broke his right leg while sliding into second base on a steal in the first inning. He is expected to undergo surgery Thursday.

"It's one of those things. I'll roll with it," Newhan said. "Hopefully they'll have some good news for me, they'll put the pins in and six to eight weeks I should be back playing. I'll keep my head up and go about it as if I'll be back soon."

Cabrera permitted only one runner past second base until the seventh, when two singles and a walk to Jose Molina loaded the bases with two outs. A passed ball by Ramon Hernandez let in a run, but Cabrera avoided further damage by getting Maicer Izturis to fly out.

The Angels knew what Cabrera had done earlier this season, but they also figured he had enough talent to correct his flaws.

"Despite what his numbers were going into today, it's not really a surprise, him being able to throw a quality game like today," said Adam Kennedy, who went 0-for-3.

LaTroy Hawkins gave up an RBI single to Garret Anderson in the eighth and Chris Ray got three outs for his fifth save in five tries.

Making his third start for the Angels since signing as a free agent during the offseason, Weaver allowed two earned runs and five hits -- all for extra bases -- in seven innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Tejada homered with a man on in the first inning to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead. It was his first home run since opening day.

"The slider I threw to Tejada was garbage. I left it over the middle and he blasted it," Weaver said.

Baltimore added two unearned runs in the second when Roberts hit a two-out, two-run double after Angels shortstop Orlando Cabrera fumbled a grounder.

Los Angeles didn't get a runner to second until the fourth inning, when Vladimir Guerrero and Anderson hit successive one-out singles. Cabrera then struck out Darin Erstad and retired Casey Kotchman on a fly ball.

"He came out and got in a zone early and got in a nice groove," Scioscia said. "We just couldn't pressure him enough early on to make a difference."

Notes

OF Juan Rivera was a late scratch from the Angels' lineup because of tightness in his rib cage, and OF Tim Salmon did not play because of a groin injury that forced him to leave Sunday's game. ... Starting for the first time since April 9, Baltimore's Corey Patterson and Chris Gomez both went hitless. ... Los Angeles is 5-11 at Camden Yards since 2003. ... Orioles LHP Tim Byrdak will undergo a CT scan to determine the source of discomfort in his left elbow. He has an 18.00 ERA in five appearances.
