TORONTO -- Kris Benson said he didn't have his best stuff. Chris Ray definitely didn't and the Baltimore Orioles still snapped their four-game losing streak.

Benson pitched seven innings, Corey Patterson had three hits and two RBI, and the Orioles survived a scare in the ninth inning to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 Thursday night.

Patterson hit a bloop, two-run double in a four-run seventh inning for the Orioles, who salvaged the last game of the three-game series.

Benson (3-2) allowed two runs and three hits to get his third win in his last four starts. He struck out four and walked three.

"I don't have my best stuff but I'm still winning," Benson said. "I'm struggling a little bit with my command."

LaTroy Hawkins pitched the eighth and Ray -- Baltimore's closer -- allowed three runs in the ninth before retiring Troy Glaus to end the game.

"As long as we win that's all I really care about," said Ray, who allowed the tying run to reach first. "Things just didn't go well. I just wasn't in the zone consistently."

Ray entered the game having pitching nine scoreless innings and Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo said he wanted to get his closer some work even though it wasn't a save situation.

"It was kind of looking shaky at the end, but they battled through it. We needed that win," Perlozzo said.

Toronto starter Casey Janssen -- making his first major league start -- had a rocky first inning. He walked Melvin Mora, allowed a single to Miguel Tejada and hit Jay Gibbons with a pitch to load the bases.

Ramon Hernandez then hit a grounder to first baseman Shea Hillenbrand, whose throw home skipped past catcher Gregg Zaun. Mora scored on the grounder and Tejada came around on Hillenbrand's throwing error.

"I never really got comfortable where I could air it out. I was just gripping it and not trying to throw it to the backstop at times," Janssen said.

Janssen (0-1) hit Nick Markakis with a pitch in the second inning. Markakis advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Brian Roberts' RBI single to give Baltimore a 3-0 lead.

Zaun's RBI single and Russ Adams' sacrifice fly cut it to 3-2 in the bottom half but Baltimore scored four runs in the seventh to make it 7-2. Patterson doubled into left-center to drive in two and Tejada and Ramon Hernandez also had RBI in the inning.

"That's a big confidence boost for him and for us," Perlozzo said of Patterson's performance.

Janssen, who replaced the injured A.J. Burnett in the rotation, allowed three runs and three hits with three walks in four innings.

Notes

The Blue Jays repaired the part of the scoreboard that Vernon Wells damaged with his homer on Wednesday. ... Janssen went 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA in four starts at Triple-A Syracuse. ... Toronto's Alex Rios went 0-for-4 with an RBI in a rare start against a right-hander. Rios is platooning with Eric Hinske in RF, but manager John Gibbons wanted Rios' bat in the lineup. He is batting .368 with six home runs. ... Rios made a nice running catch at the wall in the ninth.
