TORONTO -- Eric Hinske had a productive day in the field and at the plate for the Blue Jays.
Hinske made a spectacular defensive play and hit a questionable homer as Toronto ended a three-game skid with a 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Monday.
The converted infielder made a diving catch in right to rob Jonny Gomes of extra bases in the first. Julio Lugo scored on the sacrifice fly -- Tampa Bay's only run of the inning despite putting the first two batters on.
"It would have changed the game if I didn't catch that ball," Hinske said. "It only ended up being one run. It helped win the game."
Troy Glaus followed with a two-run homer to center off Seth McClung (2-5) in the bottom half to give Toronto a 2-1 lead.
Russell Branyan tied it with a solo shot in the second, but Hinske answered with a homer to make it 3-2. The ball appeared to either hit the top of the wall or the metal bar of the raised bullpen bench before bouncing back onto the field. The Devil Rays argued it hit the top of the wall to no avail.
Hinske stopped between second and third after left fielder Carl Crawford threw the ball back into the infield, but after a couple of moments of doubt second base umpire Greg Gibson signaled home run again.
"The umpire put his arm up and made the home run sign so I kept going. And then he throws the ball and I was like 'What's going on,'"Hinske said. "The bullpen said it was a home run. I watched the replay, too. It was."
Hinske said he hit a similar ball last year that was ruled a double.
"I guess it's redemption," Hinske said.
Tampa Bay manager John Maddon appreciated that the umpires huddled over the play.
"They said that it hit something out beyond the fence and that it came back in," Maddon said. "My discussion was that it appears as though it hit the corner of the fence and came back in, which happens a lot on those padded walls. But they did huddle and tried to get it right."
Glaus hit his 13th home run of the season to help the Blue Jays rebound from a weekend sweep by Colorado.
Rookie starter Casey Janssen (3-3) won his second straight start. Janssen, filling in for the injured A.J. Burnett, allowed four runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked none.
"I'm feeling more and more comfortable everyday. The nerves are gone. The emotion part is gone. Now I can just work on pitching," said Janssen, who made his sixth start.
B.J. Ryan pitched 1 1/3 innings for his 10th save in 10 chances. The Devil Rays put the tying run on third in the eighth, but Ryan got pinch-hitter Toby Hall to ground out to shortstop John McDonald to end the threat.
Russell Branyan and Josh Paul homered for the Devil Rays, who saw their season-high four game winning streak end.
Lyle Overbay's RBI double and Gregg Zaun's sacrifice fly made it 5-2 in the third.
Paul homered in the fifth and Julio Lugo's RBI single off Jason Frasor cut it to 5-4.
McClung fell to 0-3 in five road starts. He allowed six runs and six hits in seven innings.
Zaun's sacrifice fly in the eighth gave Toronto an insurance run.
